Rank Consistency?

Postby Leehar on Tue Feb 07, 2012 12:20 pm

Now that I've finally managed shed my hat, I've been wondering for a while if there's a way to measure how long you manage to stay at a specific rank? Either by length of time, or perhaps more accurate could be by number of games. Is me staying at colonel for 6 months while playing 70-90 games of various types, any better than a general for a year who specialised under 20 games with 1 game type, a major with 100-200 games of only 1v1's, or a medal hunter who just plays speed doodle assassin and perhaps stays as a Sergeant fc?

What variants do you play and how do your number of games affect your ranks?

I play everything. Mostly tournament games, but all types. I usually stay around 2200 or so, but I've dabbled in the at being a Colonel. My high is 2918.

I feel like I'm pretty good to keep a Major when I play so many different types of games. Once I get done medal hunting for these Assassin and Freestyle games, I think I could probably maintain a higher ranked Colonel. I'm currently in 115 games. That's my lowest total in probably 5 months. I spiked around 175 a little bit ago.

I think the more tournaments and crazy settings I play, the lower my rank gets. The numbers of active games I have doesn't effect it as much. It's the maps and settings.

i play all sorts of silly shit and i am normaly around mid-high major / low colonel.. if i stay away from stupid 1v1 tournaments and speed-games i tend to go up to colonel but that never lasts for long since i enjoy silly 1v1 tournaments and the occasional speed..

from jan 2009 till july 2011 i kept my colonel hat and didn;t lose a single point.
the fact that i hadn't played a single game was a deciding factor :))

once i came back and started playing again it was clear that being away from CC is not good for tactics so i quickly lost 700 points

then once i started remembering things i got back my hat.

considering i play all sorts of ranks and game types on any kind of maps and settings without resorting to farming/exploiting/abusing i'd say that's pretty reasonable.
however the score is in no way representative of somebody's true skill. i have found sergeants that were worthy opponents in many games but they had suck a low rank because they enjoyed speed assdoodles where they gambled their points. and i also met majors/colonels/brigadiers that were really really poor strategists when placed outside their comfort zone.

if you care about score and nothing else then you have to find some map some setting some gametype where you're good at and stick to that. milk it dry. if you do that it's actually easy to get to at the very least a colonel level.

if you play anything versus anybody on any map and any setting it's actually pretty hard to go above 3000 points and become a brigadier. i'm not saying it's impossible but it would certainly take a really gifted player to succeed that. i personally haven't seen anybody do it, regardless of how skilled they were.

I play pretty much everything. When I am going for points (like now) I will play 1v1 speed and start to lower my casual game count. When I am just playing my normal team games I will usually stay at Major. But I can also go really low when I start playing doodle assasin games and other random speed games when I get bored.

Also try to cross map every map released which was hard when I first started and my rank fell right down, but easy now as maps are not released that often. My score can drop to 1500 or lower though when a new medal is released lol.

When I play only 1vs1, my rank approaches Lieutenant or achieves it. But when I start to play Team Games, or larger multi-opponent games, I drop down to Sergeant 1st Class usually. :(

Once I made it to like 2800 after winning game 10 mil, I didn't lose it for a while. Then I lost it and dipped to 2400. Back up there now, and thats been the past 2 months or so.

I'm into big 6- and 7- player games, but there's not enough tournaments with those settings, so I find myself playing a lot of 1v1 and even some team games.

Anyway, I'm usually a Lieutenant for long periods, then I get a winning streak and jump up to Major for a couple days, and then I get a losing streak and zoom back down to Lieutenant (or, at the moment, even worse.) The winning streaks and losing streaks are partially random, but game load definitely contributes. I go up more often when I keep my game load under 50, and I tend to go down when my game load goes over 60 (as it is right now) so at least part of it is just running out of energy and making stupid mistakes.

Game load doesn't really effect me, I feel like its usually going down when I just have one of those bad streaks, or when I miss turns in speed games I forgot were going :/ But game count really doesn't do much to me :)

Yes, but then do you think that bad streaks are perhaps compounded by game load? Or would it just be due to a large number non-point conducive games?
Like how Andy moves around between sergeant and lieutenant, but with likely under 10 games at a time, but perhaps swimmers 800 point swing could be just because of 50+ bad games finishing closely?

Bad streaks / close calls are probably compounded by a larger game load I'd imagine.

I can maintain my rank if I stay away from speed games.
I try to play a different variety of maps so not to get to caught out in a clan war or tournament, I think I have played at least 1 game on every map just to see what it has to offer. If my rank takes a dip who gives a ****, although it is funny when a point whore then joins my games ive made thinking i'm a pushover and I take him to the cleaners on an abstract map taht a player my rank shouldnt understand. ;)

There is a userscript that shows graphs of your rank history. Um, it's pretty cool: here

MIne has a lot of peaks and valleys because I play everything from 1v1 speed to 8 player nukes while drunk.

I normally stay anywhere from LT to Major lol... my highest was just a wee bit above colonel but that was a one time thing. It really depends on my luck; I play mostly 1v1s on AoR2 (I'm sure some of you are aware :D) and WWII Poland, and some 4 man AoR 2

As mentioned in the script thread, I redid that script a month back, with some improvements: http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=529&p=3526372. It really shows the time as an axis in stead of *th game, and you can add another player to compare the scores over time.

How about being consistently bad, does that count? I take metamucil to improve consistency.

But again, Medal hunting to go from Brig to cap or vice versa must have made an impact? How many games were needed for such a change?
There are quite a couple of high-rankers who stayed up there for a while before just taking a huge nose-dive, from Bruce to Bogan, whereas people like MF can consistently stay at the general level.
I'd assume the number of games would make quite a difference even if it's just in a weeks span of time?

Here comes a nifty tool from Sherkaner: viewtopic.php?f=529&t=161264&start=0
How does your score graph compare?

You can see my biggest rank inconsistency came at the beginning of last year when sitters had to handle my 100+ games, but also the other thing that I was mentioning in how there were so many peaks and troughs in late 2010 because of that same game load in that 130 game range.

I see I've made a small mistake, didn't expect there was more text after the username. It should just fetch the graph of the current player if you push the button on his page.

Looks like we're all in the same score range, though DiM definately took some time off and has the slightly higher graph (it hardly goes below 2k).

It all depends on what type of games you play. There is a certain skill level that will keep you at a specific rank depending on what type of games you play.

true. i'd say that a decent player can maintain a major/colonel rank as long as he plays any game where strategy is more important than luck. so no assdoodles or 8m flatrate on luxembourg.

also my drop below 2000points was because i returned to this site and i honestly could barely remember how to play certain maps. i had forgotten the finer points of escalating and long story short i lost about 700 points :))
then i got into too many games and started screwing my rank again but managed to keep over 2k and then i finally stabilized in the lower colonel area.
