Serious Question

Postby Squirly on Tue Jan 24, 2012 1:33 pm

Why is it illegal to resurrect old threads?

I know some people are doing it to get under the mods skin, like the "I'm new here" from a long time ago
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=174

but the one about "thinking about CC" is kind of funny. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=85191
It's retarded but it's kind of funny. Why does it need to be locked?
seems kind of wrong to lock it just because it's been inactive for a long time.

If that's the case, why don't they go and lock every old thread from a certain point on?

BTW, I'm not trying to start any trouble. I had no interest in posting on that thread, I just think there was no reason to lock it.

It is only against the rules if you are doing it for no reason. If you have a reason and are adding to the conversation, then it's ok to necro-bump a thread. Otherwise it's an annoyance mostly and clogs up the area where newer threads that people have interest in are at.

There is no problem with reviving old threads provided that you add relevant content to it.

However under the community guidelines, reviving old threads "just for fun" falls under spamming and may just win you a vacation

Excellent question, Squirly. I'll be honest with you:

Harm to the forum's users doesn't have to be shown--no matter how funny and inoffensive the "necro-bumping" may be. The reasons for locking such threads are almost always arbitrary, and the discretion is rampant because the mods don't really follow a clear guideline, which is itself ambiguous, so the outcome tends to be inconsistent, thus unpredictable.

If you enjoy a very sterile environment, you'll get along in the fora. Currently, the primary source of amusement in GD is the lackattack-related ones, but in general the sources of lulz are inappropriate, which unfortunately leads to a relative increase in the amount of negative, petty drama here.

This enables a self-reinforcing loop where forum-goers are constantly bombarded by the petty drama, which enables them to act the same way or discourages them from regularly participating here.

Of course, a demand for lulz exists; however, the current enforcement mechanism via the mods discourages the supply of lulz. Therefore, the market price of lulz is out of control, which makes efficient planning and coordination vastly difficult for entrepreneurs to obtain the profits of making people laugh.

So you believe KH didn't sufficiently contribute to a thread called "Do you ever think of Conquer Club while banging?".

It was a joke thread, he posted a joke.

God knows, if stuff like that and the unbelievably offensive flame on 2dimes wouldn't be promptly locked this place would just devolve into anarchy.

I'm sure you didn't mean that as a threat but the phrase "may just win you a vacation" came off to me as if it were fun to ban someone. I'm not referring to you or anyone in particular but the atmosphere here has become so hostile that I feel uncomfortable posting anymore and it has even soured me on playing some. I'm not referring to the hostility between players, that doesn't bother me. It's the hostility between CC and the members that is now a tangible vibe, to me anyway. Playing is my primary focus so I can live without the forums. I won't have a place to register grievances anymore but they don't appear to be addressed anyway.

Between CC and the members? Wow....thats a big statement.....how many members do we have?

Don't you mean between CC and the zekes that like to stir things up and be perpetually negative? I imagine that represents an insignificant percentage of the "members".

Maybe your concerns aren't addressed because....well.....have you showered recently?

You are right. I should have written posters using the forum that don't suck up.

Its much better to have 35,000 useless/meaningless/ridiculous/clever/stupid threads about Lack clogging up the forums than it is to bump an old interesting/entertaining one for fun.

Nope. Just an observer.

Its no big deal; this happens periodically when the Davy Jones folks get bored then come over and splash around in the GD to try and amuse themselves.

Do or do not... there is no try.

In any event, it seems there are a lot more GD-regulars than off-topics regulars making "illegal" posts (unless GLG, owenshooter, and COF have become off-topics regulars in the last two minutes).

My apologies, I was speaking of the Lack threads mostly there....
