I am was a mere 5th kyu in Aikikai Aikido, but I haven't really been practising for 2 years now. The main reason that I stoped practising (and I know how stupid this is going to sound) is that it realy messed me up on spiritual level (Aikido, one of the most spiritual activities one can do :!:  ). The problem was in my character:
1) I can't stand authority,
2) I try to be fair towards people. I figured: "You are training in Aikido dojo in wich you are expected to behave a certain way. Nobody forced you to come; you came because you want to learn something from these nice people. So, if they have rules, follow them!" and
3) When I follow the rules, I have no measure. It's a monkey thing really. Mentally I understand that rules have a sense and purpose (well thes rules have, anyway) but I just can't force myself to accept the rules as my own. So, after some time, I came to realize that I am bowing to my professors, friends that I meet or people that I am introducing myself to. :( And I (no offense ment to Orientals) hate to bow! :x So, I measured the pros and cons and left the dojo. :(
But, at least I learned a) learned lot of interasting and usefull stuff and b) re-learned that not to have predjudice about people based on their age (the best fighter I ever saw was a 65 year old women about 1.6 meters tall)

Why would you be interested in self defense when you are the fastest gun in Mid-World. You already kicked Cort's butt using your hawk. Get back on the trail of the man in black and save the Dark Tower.

I'm a blue double-stripe in taekwondo :D I was about to get my red because I was ready for it, but I might do that some other time, because I didn't have much time on my hands :D

I watch tons of kung-fu films (the dodgy 70's ones) does that count?
If I could learn one type it would be the "drunken style" from Drunken Master.
I would think that would probably be the most useful at the weekends in Glasgow!

OK. We've got a respectable martial arts community. So what is the craziest thing you've done / seen? For me it was breaking a 2 in thick cement block with my head (I know explains a thing to two doesn't it?).

Seen......i saw a guy at an after comp party break a chopstick on his throat by pushing it in towards himself....that was kinda cool.

I went to see the Shaolin Monks when they toured the UK. One wee guy (probably about 16-17 years old!) lay on a bed on nails while another monk dropped a concrete slab about a foot thick on top of him! Pretty impressive you'd think...until…another monk stepped up and proceeded to break the slab with a sledge hammer.
Intense.

I've done that one too. You pretty much have to dive on the bed sideways to really get hurt. You could do it with no training. I don't suggest it mind you......but you could. The chopstick thing sounds cool, I snapped an apple in two with my fingers once at a party. No idea if it was really a hard thing to do or not. I haven't tried it since. It's kind of messy.

Wow! I'm sure I could do it too. Just it would be doubtful whether I could walk again afterwards...

I've been practising Wing Chun for 11 years. I've played chi sau with grandmaster Ip Chun, and sifus Shaun Rawcliffe and Sam Kwok (and many others, but these were the best I've played). I've seen the chopstick in the throat trick a few times.

I also saw the Shaolin monks on their Wheel Of Life tour and they were absolutely amazing.

- edit - here's a video of Shaun Rawcliffe playing blindfold chi sau at a mixed styles seminar in Cheltenham last october. There's also a variation on the chopstick trick at the end. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzghhbbQzrc

I studied tae kwon do every day in korea, never quite got my black belt though. Wing chun looks really interesting though, might even give it a go

I found that the basics of Wing Chun are a good thing for a TKD stylist to learn. The amazing close in-fighting (I mean really these guys can beat you up in a phone booth!) is a great completement to the our strong kicking. My TKD instructor picked me up off of my feet and landed me on my back, five feet away, with a Wing Chun punch that started three inches from my chest.

How long were you in Korea?

Red belt is the sign of the grand master in my karate system. I believe the theory is that he has defeated so many people that their blood is permantly stained onto his belt.

As for Anarkist knowing how to use a sword, I have learned basic weapon fighting but will not learn much until I reach my next rank. Out of all the weapons I've been through I would have to say that chucks (that's what we call them in my dojo.) are the hardest to weild, one wrong move and you break your own nose.

My father studied under Professor Chow (grand master of Kempo Karate) and worked with Ed Parker, and as a hand to hand combat instructor for the military.

I studied Kempo from him but ended up doing golden gloves boxing. I now train in MMA in San Jose.
