Play set of cards during attack stage?

How do I play a set of cards during my attack stage (acquired through defeat of an opponent, obviously) ?

You will only be able to cash mid-turn if it leaves you with 5 or more cards.

I had a little problem with that the other day. Having played a hell of a lot of risk here I still made the mistake of eliminating the weakest player for 3 cards and then was pissed when I couldn't use them! Needless to say I left myself defenseless and am about to lose now. Risk becomes a lot harder when you are tired...
