Has CC Made You Smarter, No Change, or Worse?

Postby rdsrds2120 on Thu Jul 21, 2011 12:13 am

You know, all of these games that require complex thought and a constant New feed from the Catbox I believe has made me a bit smarter. Though, I bet there are some who feel differently, ha.

Then, CC is what made me learn Photoshop and general image editing. I would have never tried to learn if I would have never been interested in making a map. This led to many class projects having great detail and teacher brownie points due to the aesthetics.

I think it's a mix of pros and cons. The main con is CC is a freaking magnet for my eyeballs, and I'll be on for hours without realizing it. The main pros for me are the Map Foundry and just being an Entertainment mod - I love helping out with the Newsletter and Special Events.

At any rate, I think the pros outweigh the cons.

I've learned some things about economics, politics, and science... so I checked the "smarter" box.

I believe I also try to be more grammatically correct to avoid being called out.

I suppose I didn't entirely answer the question at hand  I meant, CC makes me smarter for reasons I've stated. It makes you dumb when you're on for hours when you could be doing more productive things like sleeping, but smarter in that...I dunno, you could say political information, but to me, just the whole online community thing is an interesting experience of its own... Awareness of common opinion? Responsibility, diligence and organization of spec events and the Newsletter...?

Hm, well I'm not sure the poll reflects the nuances of how I intend to answer!

I think over the course of time on CC, I've become more aware of geography and place names/locations, and I've become more aware of the diverse opinions there are about News and Talk from the Off Topics.

But if I put together the sum total of time I've spent on CC, and compare it to above, I'm probably getting a low-return on smartness for time spent on CC. :D But that's okay.

My graphical skills have surely improved while I've been making CC maps.

Also, my writing skills have improved while I've been on CC forums. I could also say my strategical skills have improved while playing games on CC.

But does correlation imply causation? Perhaps it's just a coincidence.

Too much CC meant i did not focus when i was at college :( I think i may have suffered because of it!

However i have as Andy mentioned gained more geographical knowledge :)

How about that, the poll is split down the middle.

This reminds me of a news story I just heard a day or so ago, about how US Students are not proficient in geography:
http://newsfeed.time.com/2011/07/21/whe ... geography/

Maybe we should petition schools across the United States (and the world while we're at it), to include Conquer Club in their Lesson Plans, for the greater good our species.

Maybe it's the only thing we can do. Internet petition for CC, anyone?

I've always had an interest in Geography but it's definitely improved since being on CC. And tournaments have given me a reason to keep using Excel instead of forgetting what I learnt at school. Hopefully it'll come in useful one day!
Important Tournament Notice

The data for ALL of my tournaments has potentially been lost. I am working to recover it but as I am away on business all of this week, there will be some delay. Sincere apologies.

It also helped my spelling a little bit.

I guess it has made me smarter strategically... but, i doubt staying on the computer for a while does anything to really improve your brain..

I mean strategically, yes I've gotten better, but it's not real relevant to my RL (I'm not a war games strategist). So I'd call it no change.

5 days after I said this, viewtopic.php?f=1&t=150133#p3279015 happened. I'm clearly a premonitionist because of CC now, and therefore it has made me smarter! If there's no hope for job prospects, it's good to know I'll have my psychic abilities, now.

Strategy-wise sure. Plus all the maps that are history related are a pleasure as I'm planning to attempt a PhD in History soon. And some of the maps have actually help me to recall certain things I needed in my classes sometimes so I'd have to say it's bumped me up a tad.

Don't worry, we'll offer scholarships to some of the best gamer-students.

And we'll start up an athletic team as well to fill in that niche.

Maybe your Homecoming King can be merged with 'Dean' of the new CCU(niversity).

Smarter & Better off...

Smarter strategy wise...I recently went home to the states and did have the chance to play risk a couple times with some fam & friends, when i was younger I remember I could never win against these guys... going home after being on CC for 2 years... destroyed them, noticed every little noob move everyone of them made. :-$ 8-)

Better off... made some great people on CC, some I would consider friends, improved my skills in photo-shop which has helped me work on real life projects as well for work... and the main reason i joined CC in the first place was to play with my brother & sister... we have played together for 2+ years now and has helped us connect across the world on a regular basis...so all is good.
