Etiquette

Postby Coz on Fri Jun 24, 2011 4:42 am

Hi there!

I'm a completely new Risk player. I've never played it on a board, only online, and I've been teaching myself how to play.

I've been really enjoying learning to play, but am slightly concerned that since I'm teaching myself I may be missing out on some of the game etiquette. In lots of games there are certain things that are considered bad form, and I don't want to annoy anybody I'm playing with by unintentionally doing some of them.

So I was wondering if the forum could help! Are there any bits of etiquette that I should know, or certain things that I shouldn't do?

Thanks

Coz

In games with fog of war don't go yelling out other people's positions if you can see 'em ;) Hope you enjoy CC! :)

I'm not sure how much across the board etiquette there is on CC. Most users appreciate those that play their turns regularly and don't miss any, and kudos for playing faster than the 24 hour clock usually.

Other than that, there are all sorts of etiquette that is unique to individuals---for instance, as jleonnn pointed out, some think it is bad form to discuss details about a Fog of War game in game chat, while others see it as part of the gameplay for the setting.

Some dislike when their opponent says nothing to them in game chat, others don't even notice a silent game chat.

Additionally, some may like a coarse and banter filled game chat, while others may prefer lighter game chat.

There use to be a topic around here somewhere I think called something like: "Things I wish I knew before I started..."---I wonder where it is...hm,

Play fair, and be a good sport. You can't always win, so don't complain when you lose. The dice here are controlled by neutral player, and sometimes he favors one player or another in games. So don't get angry when he decides to go against you.
Have fun!
Remember it's just a game and even though it's fun to get points and increase your rank you can still have fun as a cook.
Quitting half way through a game is bad. I'm not joking when I say that I once won a game because all the other players got kicked out for missing turns. It was horrid.
But yeah most of the etiquette is self-explanatory. Have fun and enjoy your games! :)

There is no etiquette because this is the internet. I could call shieldgenerator a donkey-fucker (jokingly, so don't ban me mods) and there will be no repercussions.

No offense taken. I won't press charges, mods.

Yeah, when surfing the forums here at CC you have to be careful, some of this content should be screened (especially someone I know  ), so yeah I'm glad you have good forum etiquette, Coz. Keep it up, and welcome to the forums, and CC!

Thanks for the replies and the welcomes!

That all sounds reasonable, don't think there's anything there that I would've done anyway. It's good to know that I'm not missing anything important though, and I'll bear in mind that different people have different ideas about some things 8-)

I'd disagree. Although there's a lot of nastiness on the internet (and I think it says something a bit depressing about humans that, just because they're anonymous, a lot of people turn nasty when using it), I've been a member of some internet forums where the vast majority of people have been polite and courteous, not because it was enforced, but just because that's the way they were.

Taking peoples stacks out for no apparant reason other then, "They looked scary". Suiciding other players out of spite or stupidity a big no no to many.

Suiciding is indeed probably one of the more agreed upon / wider-reaching etiquette pieces on CC, good spot.

It is polite to wish your opponent to have a merry whatever-holiday-is-upcoming and then to turn it into an ensuing argument. For example:

Beckytheblondie: Merry Flag Day
Army Of GOD: You suck
Beckytheblondie: My Founding Father's don't think I do.
Army of GOD: I had intercourse with your Founding Mother.
Beckytheblondie: That's rude; but it's your American right to do that.
Army of GOD: To have sex with your Founding Mother? It's more than a right, it's a patriotic duty.
Beckytheblondie: Affirmed.
Army of GOD: See you around Independence Day.
Beckytheblondie: Stay away from my sister.
2011-11-07 14:19:43 - StinknLincoln: whoa, what happened?
2011-11-07 14:19:50 - Beckytheblondie: Becky happened

Becky, I wonder if you made that up or not. I can completely imagine AoG saying something like that.
