i dont think you need to be on your death bed in order to have the flu. that's pneumonia. flu is in between. cold means you miss 1-3 days of work. flu would be approx. 5-10 days. and pneumonia kept me in bed for 6 weeks!

Well now, you might think I'm being pedantic here, but I did imply it was a pet peeve of mine. Colds, influenza and pneumonia are not different as a matter of degree: they are all completely different illnesses. I found this page which summarises the difference between colds and 'flu. Plus Spanish 'Flu killed more people than the First World War. No-one ever died of the common cold. Ever. I can't source that, but it's true. People who say they had the 'flu when they didn't are just trying to make a case of the sniffles seem more important than it was. So there.

I really hate it when people say they were off work with the "'flu". It wasn't 'flu, it was a cold!

Colds are annoying infections that pass away fairly quickly. 'Flu is highly debilitating, and can need hospitalisation, and can even lead to DEATH. So which did you have, motherf*cker!?!?

Mind you, I did annoy one of my co-workers once when I said something to that effect, and it turned out she had had 'flu. I hadn't noticed she'd been off work for three weeks.

As the sickly sort, I take particular issue with this.

What makes you think that people who take off work for a few days when they're sick don't have the flu? The article you linked to says that the truly debilitating part of the flu usually only lasts for a couple of days. The vast, vast, vast majority of people with the flu need neither hospitalization nor an undertaker.

Well, it occurs to me that maybe this isn't commonplace in other countries, but certainly where I live it's very common for people to say "Oh, I had the 'flu", as if the 'flu is the same irritating condition as a cold is.

I simply wouldn't take anyone's word for having had 'flu, unless they'd actually been diagnosed with it. If they haven't been, then it's a 99% chance it was a cold. Full stop.

People who snore, and people who try to act like they are snoring that makes it worse. If so I just give them a swift kick in the chest. They bug me over the wall.

I accept chiropractors may be effective if limited just to conditions of the back - I was thinking of the ones who push chiropractic as being effective for a much wider range of conditions, but never mind.

Biggest pet peeve, cheaters. Today in class, when I sat down, the person sitting next to me was copying from someone elses paper. When the teacher came in, the kid took his paper back and my deskmate was left with about 1/4 of his paper completed and due in 30 seconds. I asked him why he didnt do it at home. He said he didnt know how. (It was to make a simple outline of the lesson) When I take out my completed paper to hand in, he grabs it and starts hiding it. I wrestled it out of him, and told him to stop. Then he had the nerve to shout out, "He is being mean to me!"

I have to say, I never had anything as bad as that happen to me. Don't worry about it - be on your guard next time, but I'd say it's unlikely a single incident will reflect on you in the long term, even if that's difficult to believe now.
