texas/mexico 1836 alamo [first try on a map]

Postby Gemineye on Wed Mar 28, 2007 12:26 pm

Well, this is my first idea/post for a new map, so be nice! haha.

i thought it would be neat to do a historical type map, and the idea i had was The Alamo. I did a little bit of research, as to how territories were divided up back in 1836, etc, and this is what i came up with. although i think it would be neat to have an entire map centered around The Alamo, i think this is more interesting, although strange at first. i know that the railroads i have come up with didnt exist, but i thought it would be a neat idea.

anyway, just let me know what you guys think, and again, keep in mind its my first try at a map. (this is a photobucket upload, so i dont know about the quality)

the Alamo can be defended by armies in one territory, Texas. A plus 6 bonus is way too much there.

maybe so, but i also see that texas is attackable from 7 different territories, which is 3 different "continents". that was the only reason i gave it such a high bonus. if you guys think it's too much, no prob changing it.

Arkansas has a river running through it, but no crossing point... does this mean they can only attack Louisiana or Missouri? does New Mex border Ures?
When you say '...only in the path shown" about railways, do you mean that they can only attack adjacent stations, or something else.
I think it's fair enough for the Alamo to have a fairly big bonus, as it is kind of the central point of the game... but maybe knock it down to 3 and +1 for Texas... maybe, though it might be better to divide Texas into 2 or 3 territories... otherwise, once you have the Alamo, you're getting extra bonus for /reducing/ your border territories by 3!
It's pretty impressive for a first go, though!

imo, the rivers are one of the biggest problems i had. i tried to be as accurate as possible w/ the rivers/borders, but they tend to confuse things, because they cross through territories.

arkansas should be able to attack Louisianna and Missouri.

New Mexico only borders Lago Grande (via bridge) and Chihuahua (again, that river kinda screws with your eyes).

Railways only attack the station they are tied to. i.e. Texas can attack Mexico City and Montanas, but not Mississippi or Iowa Territory.

I'm willing to do anything on the map...as i know you guys have a lot more experience at this than i do. i was actually already thinking about the problem w/ Texas and being able to block off all of the Alamo, but i thought it was kind of offset by the fact that so many territories are able to attack it.

maybe you could add a little interest/realism, by adding one way attack routes in and out of the Alamo complex... eg: Cannon -> out only; Enclosed building -> in only; convent yard - only attackable from the rest of the building (coz of it's walls); etc...
I'm all for bits of scenery (like rivers & mountains) that aren't just there to make impassables, so I like that there are rivers that cut through territories, but maybe there need to be bridges for clarity... maybe it's just fine...

[edit] OK, I just doodled a quick idea... (please note I know next to nothing about the Alamo, so I'm probably making horrendous mistakes, but hey!)

So you can only get in through the gate, but you can get out through the battery (as in firing the canon) or the gate. This makes the Alamo a bit of a fort (which I'm assuming it was, at least in a makeshift sort of way???)
You could then give Alamo a bonus of 2 and +2 for the whole of Texas on top of that.
(it seemed wrong to make a connection between the battery & the chapel!)

It seems like it wants to be a geographical map, but needs a basis, or a reason, thus the Alamo. The idea seems a bit cobbled together, although the map (minus the Alamo) looks great for a first draft.

Does it matter that the Alamo was a battle lost by the revolutionaries? The final battle was San Jacinto, everybody at the Alamo died.
