So.. tournaments, and 1 v 1 games..

Postby Predatorius on Thu Jan 27, 2011 2:47 am

I just joined a tournament for the first time in my CC life, and it turns out all the games are 1 v 1.. That seems like a total lottery to me, unless you pick a map that was deliberately made hyper-convoluted so a player who is willing to study it for an hour will be able to make it somewhat less of a lottery.

I don't like studying weird maps, and I also don't like lotteries. Are tournaments just not for me, or am I missing something? Is there such a thing as a regular 6-8 player Escalating tournament? (No teams also pls.)

Well, maybe you should try READING the first post in the tournament thread before deciding to join. They usually have pretty clear explanation of the format, and there are a LOT of tournament formats out there. 1v1, dubs, trips, quads, combo of these things, single elimination, double elim, best of 3/5/..., 4/5/6/7/8 player games, and that's just the beginning.

Click on the tournament tab next to 'Forum', and you can see a quick description of every tournament currently in sign-ups... Take your pick, and have fun ;)

There are a large number of 1v1 tournaments as they are quick and easy to organise. (unless you have hundreds or thousands of players). However there are typically a few that are not 1v1. Like streaker said, if you check the tournaments tab at the top for tournaments marked as Standard, Terminator, Assassin or possibly Mixed you should find a few.

Just keep an eye out. And if the tournament you want is not there, why not consider creating and running it yourself.

here's a tournament where you play 15 8-player escalating games per round on reasonable maps. Ofc you'd have to get Premium to play, and I'd have to quit my new job or stop playing teamgames to fit it into my schedule... but all the same, sounds like a great tourney.
So, buy premium and sign up!

And as others will state there ARE standard-game 4, 6, 8 player tourney's which I assume is what your after if you keep your eyes open for them. You'll have a slightly harder time finding ones as you can only join tourneys with less than 4 games/round.

Thanks!! I guess this HA 200th tournament was the first one where private messages were sent out, so then I thought I'd join. ;)

I've been looking at other players who play a lot of 1 v 1 (and clearly winning them reliably) and it's always a format that looks about as much fun as being waterboarded... King's Court in Foggy / No Spoils / Adjacent mode or something. ;)

It is just about preference--but there are many kinds of tourney like some of the others have posted. Just glad you learned about tourneys and hope you find something you like.

If you want to see just how different the various tournaments can be, allow me to brag a bit and show you one of mine (if you've got the time to read it! <laughing>):
