One of those geekish anomalies: A Sci-Fi debate with no clear outcome.

You guys are being biased in your assessments. Just because The Original Series is now more stylish and enjoyable to watch, that doesn't mean that Kirk was a better captain!

Kirk sexually harrassed members of his crew. He would put the ship in grave danger for the sake of him getting laid that night. He was brash and immature.

Though Picard was awkward and stiff, he was generally level-headed and imminently moral. In stark contrast to Kirk, Picard put ethics and the well-considered principles of the Federation above all else.

Stylish? Enjoyable to watch? How'd you get your hair to hide the lobotomy scars?

Original Star Trek is APPALLING. Just.. so so bad.

They're re-running it on BBC2 very late at night here in England, and I cannot BELIEVE how bad it is. Acting, scripting, staging, props, fight scenes are all embarrassing to sit in front of!

Sorry, Trekkies, but the truth hurts. The original Star Trek was just bad. At least the acting is acceptable in TNG..

Picard and Kirk. Um. Well, Patrick Stewart is a legend, and Shatner now plays a fat lawyer, so I'll go with Picard.

Spuzzell, maybe you need to come to accept that you're getting old. You're out of touch with what the kids like these days.

The original Star Trek has had a huge spike in popularity in the past couple of years. This spike led to the new movie, Star Trek XI, which is coming out next year and is based on the same designs and in the same time frame as the original Star Trek.

Obviously the acting is horrible. Obviously the rocks are made out of styrofoam. You're not the first person to notice such things.

The only Star Trek that is without reserve a good TV show by today's standards of what a TV show should be is the most recent series, Enterprise. Even Voyager, which is less than 10 years old, still falters under our modern sensibilities.

... Kirk was a man of the times! Absolutely fantastic. (Bad writing was not Shatner's fault)

... I mean, say you've got 2 parties of humanoid aliens arguing over rights to some ore deposits on some asteroid or something . . .

... Picard: "We must discuss this matter, gentlemen, so that we may reach a peaceable conclusion that somehow benefits both your parties. Some manner of time-share arrangement comes to mind.".

... Kirk: (turns to 2 red-shirt ensign types): "Give me your phasers!" (hands a phaser to both leaders): "Ten paces, turn, and shoot! The one who lives gets the asteroid". (Kirk moves to the corner, now disinterested and puts moves on the hot green alien servant who was serving drinks earlier).

... Yeah, Picard is all moral and ethical... but Kirk is just so much more fun.

... Best Episode (imho): Balance of Terror.

10. Picard grew up on a quaint French vineyard, squishing grapes with his toes, while Kirk slung bails of wheat and hay in Iowa to put himself through school.

9. Kirk can beat up a Klingon bare-handed

8. Kirk would date Beverly Crusher--and damn the consequences.

7. Diplomacy for Kirk is a phaser and a smirk.

6. Two words: shoulder roll.

5. Kirk made do with obviously low performance technology.

4. When Picard was 37, he was only Captain of the lowly freighter, Stargazer. When Kirk was 37 he was Captain of the flagship Enterprise.

3. Kirk once made a cannon out of bamboo, sulphur, potassium nitrate, charcoal and then fired diamonds into the hearts of his enemies.

2. The Kligon's didn't have a word for surrender--until they met Kirk

And Number 1

Kirk fought a GOD and won.

I AM still a kid.

And I'd say that what the kids like isn't Star Trek. The kids like alcohol, music, sports and trying very hard to sleep with each other.

What STAR TREK fans like is very different.

I'm fine with that, but you can't lay claim to the zeitgeist.

More kids are into rap than Star Trek, because if you're going to align yourself with a shitty sub-culture you might as well go with the one with the chance of getting laid.

And bad TV is bad TV.. it's not that other people don't "get" it, it's that it's bad TV, and only very forgiving fans will make allowances.

... Yeah, Spuzzel doesn't get it.

... Trek is not for kids, you're right. (not for kids, meaning it doesn't appeal to them).

... But we old guys! Kirk? Hell yeah! He was a god back in the day.
