First move advantage for 2 player game

Postby Grifter on Sun Nov 21, 2010 7:49 pm

If a server admin can spare a few minutes I am curious about what the advantage is for making a first move in a 2 player game.

Query: for a 2 player completed games what is the percentage that the player making the first move wins the game? Exclude games where a player missed a turn.

Making the first move allows a player to quickly grab a bigger bonus and to defend a good position. A way to offset the advantage is to not allow the first move player to receive any bonus for holding a region.

I'm not a server admin, but the largest (most common) advantage in going first is when the map has starting territories near the "times three" level. For instance, if the starting territories for each side is 15 on a map, then the person that gets to go first will automatically start with 5 armies awarded and they only have to conquer a single territory to make their opponent only get a 4 army award. That adds up, over time. Never mind when a bonus is dropped or easily gained right from the start...that just makes it even more significant.

First turn and dice are very important to winning a 1 vs 1 game though not essential if you are skilled enough or your opponent is not skilled. As a result of this a lot of people enjoy team games/multi player games more as strategy is more of a factor in who wins.

I expect that the player to move first would win more often. I am curious to know how often. Given the large number of games played the percentage won would be interesting. If it was more then 60% then it would be a concern.

I am playing the Halloween tournament which starts with a 2 player game. I split the first two games with the first move player winning their respective games. I hope I get to go first for the tie breaker game.

I lost my third game in the tournament even though I moved first. The other player had a better starting position with most of Europe. I also goofed on one of my turns. I split my troops for 2 different attacks and left my self in a weak position to defend. Lessons learned.

first one to go may have an advantage, but this is a luck game since it involve dice and random regions deployement, so i'll say 50% - 50% ( i play a lot of 1 vs 1 ) and i have to say it always depends on the first player's rolls and where the initial troops deployement ... in one word = luck

In large maps like World 2.1 or Supermax Prison Riot, the advantage of going first in 1v1 is huge, because your initial troop deployment is larger than usual and you can use that to aggressively decrease your opponent's "troops due" at the very first turn (since you're the first one to "bite", your opponent will be forced to fight passively until you get crap dice). The advantage is decreases for smaller maps as both players receive 3 troops in their first turn.
The advantage is even more insignificant for maps with starting regions (ex.Feudal Epic), because those maps rely more on auto-deploy than territory number in terms of gaining more troops at the beginning of your turn. Also, you can't sabotage your opponent on the first turn because there are so many neutrals to break at first. If you want a more fair 1v1 game, I suggest you play on the starting position maps instead of the "normal" maps.

like i said in the halloween tourney forum my oppenent went first in all 3 games(world 2.1)i won 2 of the 3 games!!!i play alot of 2 player games and i dont think it matters to much on who goes first.i think if i played only 2 player games my winning % would be about 65%.i dont think it matters to much on who goes first,i think it matters more on the roll of dice and the drop on the board!!!!!now if u have all 3 then it lights out,if u get 2 of the 3 then u have an advantage.just going first alone is not enough to win the game... if the drop is even and the dice are fair then the game could go either way!!!!

I was also wondering about the use of bots to get 1 move advantage. more and more i encounter ppl in free style play that have this and the bot auto takes a turn as soon as the game starts or as soon as i take a turn.

I'd be interested to see this statistic as well.

50%-50%, hard- iplay in tournament where in first 20 game i only in 2 start first-and score are 16 loses and 4 win(and these games are in small maps belove 12 teritories) these mean that playing first are very big advantage in mine case.
