Approaching fog/ Fading fog

Postby nandu on Sat Nov 06, 2010 11:18 am

my thought was that the game could use (and these titles are just off the top of my head so feel free to comment) "approaching fog" and "waning fog"

Approaching fog: game starts with no fog of war. as the 2nd round starts, a fog starts to settle in disallowing you to see regions that are 5 moves away (5 is an arbitrary example and can easily be replaced with a diff #). on the 3rd round, you can no longer see 4 moves away from your occupied regions (again, number is arbitrary but it will always be the round 2 # minus one). the 4th round, the fog moves one closer, and so on until a full fog of war.

Waning fog: begins with fog of war. 2nd round leads to you be able to see 2 regions away from yours (as the fog begins to lift) the 3rd round the fog lifts a bit more and so on.

This is a pretty flexible suggestion that can be tweaked but I think it would be really fun. I do not know much about computer programming and such so I do not know if it would be easy to implement but if so, it could prove interesting.

This reminds me of a game I play- Fire Emblem.

I think it would be fun. This option would be incredibly dynamic and offer a unique strategy to those who would know how to take advantage of the setting.
Thumbs up!

an intereting idea, I'd certainly like to try playing with variable fog. It might be an idea to add that the first round could be played in any state between full fog and no fog, with the players not knowing the initial conditions before starting.

I think it would be a fun and unpopular option to have TOTAL fog of war where you can't see the size of the stack on the region you're attacking.

this one sounds like fun.. I think I'd enjoy a complete wall of fog around also.. where you can't even see what you're attacking :)

i don't like it

i find it unreasonable that all of the earth (think World 2.1) would be engulfed in a fog, mist, drizzle or some other phenomenon

You're suggesting random weather patterns where regions are randomly hidden each turn ?

First off, I'm psyched that there are so many responses to this. Thanks everyone!

2nd @ greenoaks: thats whats great about putting many heads together on these ideas. what you say is completely legitimate. for a larger map, it would seem unlikely that an entire planet would be covered by the same system and would fade or approach at the same rate equally throughout that world. (although for a map as small as 'haiti' or 'cyprus' i think it would be quite believable) how about random patches of fog of war that moved throughout the map for larger maps? (like man bungalow suggests)

then again, you can currently have a fog of war over the entire planet as the game stands now; this is not perfect in that armies have spies and scouts, etc, to gather information from other nations/regions in real life even if the nation is not neighboring them.

well, its just an idea. any variations on it would only improve the idea so more input/criticism is most welcome!!

to each of you, may the dice be nice...
