New Speed game variant

Postby Halmir on Mon Oct 11, 2010 11:25 am

Concise description:
  • A speed game currently has a 5 minute turn limit. If u have set it up for Freestyle, people can play simultaneously but are still bound by the slowest turn taker (which is of course a perfectly permissible tactic to employ!) This suggestion proposes the next level for Speed games, which is to make it a seamless Real Time battle

Specifics/Details:
  • Once the players have signed up to the game, they enter the game and are presented with a Ready button. This is vital to ensure that all are good to go, as what happens next will be mayhem! (The game auto starts within 5 minutes of the host readying up)
  • Once the game kicks off, each player takes their first turn in the normal way (gets all bonuses due, deploys reinforcements, attacks, reinforces again). This sets everyone up ready for the next stage, from Turn 2 it gets far more hectic.
  • From Turn 2 to the end of the game, everyone plays simultaneously - and then carries on taking as many turns as they can, without needing to wait for other players. It's possible that with careful planning you could get through twice as many turns as your opponents in the same time period!
  • Due to time issues, all cards are automatically deployed as soon as a deployable set is formed. If you're swift you could receive 5-10 bonus cards a minute! Probably wouldn't want to have Escalating cards in this until we've worked out the maths and gameplay ;-)
  • A cunning player will think about doing a single move to set themselves up to get a territory bonus, end their turn early and start their next turn, just to get that territory bonus before anyone else takes it away from them.
  • A reckless player will amass all troops into a single region in Turn 1, then aim to take out an opponent or two in a charge - however this could be the right tactic, if they can grab a bunch of cards by so doing, they could keep up the momentum.

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • A Crazy new silly game type which could be immense fun!
  • Initially limited to premiums and established (20+games) members to avoid noob farming; might even be worth looking at ranges of ranks (i.e. limited to Sergeants and below or Captains and above as opponents)
  • The screen would need to auto-refresh every second to make this playable (may cause technical problems for the site?).

Although this sounds cool in principle it would not be that much fun to play because i could take a bonus...begin and deploy a few times before you break it and then have amassed a large number of troops to go attacking you around the map

Yeah, the game would be over in less than five minutes

I think you'd find others having the same idea ;-) Strangely the best bet could be to hide in a corner then emerge triumphant - and that's precisely the tactic that enemies would watch out for after they get the hang of this game type.

Personally I don't play Speed that often but I'd be interested in hearing from folks who do do this more often/ as their default game type (not saying u don't!) ?

As for the other comment about games in 5 minutes - yes it's possible but imagine those 5 minutes?! RTS games are very fast paced and a real adrenaline rush. Every single click you'd make in this game would count, a moment's hesitation in deploying your forces could be fatal as someone may have taken that territory off you! You could have the embarrassment of trying to deploy a Rainbow to hold the front line, and be losing your lands quicker than you can select them :)

a moments hesitation from my ISP and its game over

not saying this shouldn't be implemented, just that many people might be at a severe disadvantage to a lucky few

I'd say there's far less risk of that in such a proposed game type than you run in any online shooter or RTS?

What if instead of being able to start immediately, the player was required to wait until either: half of the time their turn took passed (min 30 seconds), or all other players are on the same round as they are.

if they have to wait for others to be on the same round then it's the same as Freestyle, is it not?

No. They can continue their turn if everyone is on the same round. OR after they wait the half of their turn time penalty (half of the time it took them from begin to end turn
