Etiquette with Fog of War and maps with objectives

Postby adidasnmotion on Thu Sep 30, 2010 1:04 pm

Sorry if this question has already been asked, but I couldn't find the answer. I understand that giving information about troops and location is not against the rules but is frowned upon by many. However, when playing with fog of war on a map with objectives, for instance the "Third Crusade" map (where holding a starting point, Jerusalem, Antioch, and either the vatican or granada wins the game) is it still considered bad taste if someone states in chat that a particular player either is about to or has captured all the objectives? In this case, you wouldn't be stating how many troops the user has or what territories they have, just that a user is about to win, which will end the game for everyone.

I guess I'm just wondering if most players approve/disapprove of this in regards to ratings they leave other players.

I would suggest that this is one of the situations where I would not frown upon it. However I would also expect that I may get a bad rating from the player who holds them, since you will cause them not to win the game, so they will be annoyed and vengeful.

It is a bit of a lose/lose situation, if you say nothing you lose the game, if you say something you may get a bad rating.

In my opinion I would go ahead and announce it. However perhaps don't announce how many troops he has.

This is a difficult one, and i expect that you will get differing views.

I firmly believe that you would be best served in this situation by revealing the info in a more tactful way. For example, you could write, "Wow! Looks like you've won ______, gg!"

I believe that it is only acceptable to reveal that kind of information if the player who is about to win is a farmer(*cough Oasis team games *cough)

There are no rules in war. If someone doesn't like it, they will just have to get over it.

But there are rules on Conquer Club, of course. ;)

But generally there are no rules relating to what information or misinformation can be given as it relates to Fog of War. But, as with any strategy or tactic, be advised that your opponents will rate your accordingly---and may add you to their foe list.

the other players might appreciate it; the winner and his friends probably wouldn't

I once played St Pattys day map with fog. Everyone announced if they saw some one on the objective. I didn't like it at first but I think it made the game more interesting this way and made it last longer. We all gave good ratings afterwards. I guess it really depends on the players involved.

My personal opinion is that you should never give away another players (or your own) strength or position in a FOW game under any circumstances. I'm inclined to foe anyone who does this on a regular basis. There'd be no point playing fow If everyone did it.

It is however perfectly ok to draw attention to details that are in the log and therefore public, ie if another player has just collected a load of bonuses then to point this out and encourage everyone to gang up on them is ok, providing you don't actually reveal their location or how many of their troops you can see.

Complete agreement- if you don't like the idea of losing in a fog of war game when someone has the victory objective, don't play fog of war, or don't play victory objective maps, or don't play them in combination (whichever works for you).

In this instance:

it sounds as though most of the players should have chosen a non-objective map, there are many more of those than there are objective-based maps. I definitely get annoyed with players who circumvent the spirit of the settings/map because they don't want to lose. Losing happens all the time, but the settings/map were hopefully chosen because the players were hoping for fun- talking about troop locations in FOW ruins that for some us.
