tournament replacements

Postby greenoaks on Wed Oct 06, 2010 3:29 am

if a tournament is a points for wins type and someone drops out, does the replacement come in to just make up the numbers or do they assume any points that had been accrued by the one they are replacing ?

That depends on the rules the tournament organiser set-up.

i am a tournament organiser, and i am asking the community what usually happens when they are in tournaments - as players, replacements or organisers

i want a feel for what has gone on before, what might be expected

has anyone joined a points tournament as a replacement ? what happened ?
has anyone played in a points tournament with replacements ? what happened ?

This tournament was based from the begining that they'll need a lot of reserves

Another that can be curious

it is a very good question a TO should consider before drafting the first game. I (have learned the hard way to) usually look hard at tournaments and I will only join if i like what i see. changing how someone can enter a tournament will have potential big impact. If someone did well, and the new player inherits the points then someone could get to a final without really have played hard.. On the other hand, if someone starts early and does a lot of work/games, and is not eligible by principle(of the TO) for a tourny win/finals/medal, well that sucks too.

So i should consider if the tournament is in its infancy qua rounds, then an addition will not rock the boat, but if its about the finals, then that sucks. Also you could just bump people up. Those that got send home can now still participate. You can also just reduce the number of opponents for a particular round.

in short, there are lots of options you need to consider and a lot of consequences you will have to take into account.
If you want my advice, you will have to be more specific about your tourny. its rules, size and current state.

also next time consider this point up front and make some rules for them. its clear that way for everybody

regards,

The most common approach I've seen is to put the new player in the same spot the missing player was in, including inheriting the record of that player from past games.
