Mexican Standoff (ended, no signups before next week)

Postby aage on Tue Sep 21, 2010 6:23 am

Okay, since there's a lot of demand for short Mafia games, I thought I'd add my two cents.
Mexican Standoff
In a small but dangerous town in the far, far west, a new Sheriff has been appointed by the state govenor. He and his two deputies have been charged with a single task: to eliminate the notorious Bandito that has been terrorizing the area. However, they cannot reveal their true identity, since that would mean nothing more than a bullet in the head, coming from the Bandito's gun.
They are not alone, though... The Govenor has also promised a large amount of money to anyone who will catch the Bandito and turn him in, dead or alive. Two bounty hunters, adapt at disguizing themselves, have travelled to this town with only the reward in mind.
The Bandito now stands alone between enemies, but if he uses his wit and manages to shoot the Sheriff before he is taken down himself, the panic and chaos will provide enough cover to escape unharmed.

Roles:

1 (Drunk) Sheriff
2 Deputies
2 Bounty hunters
1 Bandito

Image 1 Drunk Sheriff (The King Role, Armed)
If the Sheriff dies, both he and the Deputies loose the game. He doesn't know who anyone is.
Image 1 Sheriff's Deputy (Armed)
He knows the Sheriff, but not the Bandito. He must protect the Sheriff.
Image 1 Disorientated (Unarmed) Deputy
He knows the Sheriff, but not the Bandito. He must protect the Sheriff. He is, however, unarmed.

Image 2 Bounty Hunters (Armed)
They don't know the Sheriff, but don't care if he dies. They just want to kill the bandit. They know each other.

Image 1 Bandito (Armed)
He knows nobody. He must kill the Sheriff.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT TALK TO EACH OTHER BY ANY OTHER MEANS THAN THIS THREAD
This rule is sort of designed for the bounty hunters, since the ability to talk privately would mean they could plan out the standoff all by themselves and have a huge advantage, but goes for all other players as well. Do not use PM/chat/whatever other means you ppl found to talk privately. The thread is the only area where you may legitimately converse.
Violating this rule will result in instant ModShot (MK), which as you may agree will utterly ruin the game.

Phase 1: Lynching

As with all mini mafia games, it starts with a Lynching phase. Justice is hard in the west, real trials are hard to come by, and punishment is delivered by your peers, through a noose.

Every player has one vote. The aim is to lynch the Bandit, and (in the case of the deputies) prevent the Sheriff being lynched.

Of course the secondary aim is for everyone to work out who the bandit is, and for the bandit to try to work out the identity of the Sheriff.

In theory, Lynching continues till the bandit is lynched.

Phase 2: The Mexican Standoff

At any point in the game, any armed living player (everyone except the poor unarmed deputy), can break the standoff. Note that there is no "last chance kill" for a man who has just been lynched, you can only break the shootout if you are alive and well.

To do this, an armed player must PM me with the name of the player they want to shoot.

I will then announce the fact the Standoff is broken (by shouting EVERYBODY FREEZE! or something like that), and all players must PM me with instructions as to who they will shoot. The identity of the first shooter, and everyone's targets will not be revealed till all orders are in. The shooting ends 24 hours after the first shot has been fired.

You are not allowed to post during the shootout.
If I'm your mod, your first post will cost you your shot and your second post will cost you your life. In case of the unarmed deputy I will be empathic and forgive their first post, but even empathy has a border. 2 posts simply means you've been ModShot.

The resulting shootout is resolved by the order in which people submit their orders. The fastest (on the draw) shoots first, and if you've already been shot, your orders to shoot are cancelled.

I will then post the results in the thread. If both the Bandit and the Sheriff are still alive, we have a second round of shooting, till one or both are dead.

The timing of breaking the Standoff should be critical to the game, think about it carefully, whoever you are.

The results
When the Sherrif or the Bandito (or both) are down, the game ends, I will reveal roles and I will award points.

*Sheriff:
Sheriff alive and Bandito down: 5
If not: 0
Bonus for every deputy alive n kicking: 1

*Deputy:
Sheriff alive and Bandito down: 5
If not: 0
Bonus if alive: 1

*Bounty hunters:
If alive and Bandito down: 5
If not: 0
Bonus if both hunters survive: 2

*Bandito:
If alive and Sherrif down: 5
If not: 0
Bonus for every other casualty (without himself): 1

Right, and all the other Mafia rules also apply. You know which...

Pretty straightforward, but still fun. It's a 6 player game, and I believe I can promise it to take no more than a week to start playing and even finish the game already (yes, the guns do speed up this game a little ;) )

That's a full list. Let's get this train rolling.

The sand whirls around your boots as you step outside your house. Hands disappear under jackets, hands are being raised in accusation, eyes dance from face to face. Will the Bandito die, or will he prevail? Who will die in the process? Will you survive? Who knows...

Player list:
1. Colton24
2. Edocsil
3. Fircoal
4. AceArtemis
5. Haggis_McMutton
6. Cena-rules

Roles are being sent in a few minutes.
Phase 1 starts.

Edit
As in, now. The lynching phase begins.

Sorry for posting overly much as a mod, but there's one rule I failed to make clear yet.

DO NOT TALK TO EACH OTHER BY ANY OTHER MEANS THAN THIS THREAD
This goes for the deputies (since the sheriff should not know who the deputies are) and even for the bounty hunters (since that would mean they could plan out the standoff all by themselves and have a huuuuge advantage). Since the Bandito and the Sheriff don't know anything, they shouldn't worry overly much, but still, DO NOT USE PM/CHAT/whatever other means you ppl found to talk privately. The thread is the only area where you may legitimately converse.

I hope this is clear. Violating this rule will result in instant mod kill, which as you may agree will utterly ruin the game.

There's no such thing as day and night in this game. I'm sorry if that's not clear.

In the first phase, that actually already has started, you guys will be lynching each other till, in the rule, bandito or sheriff dies. Generally this will not happen very often, but as this is mafia, per rule you start with lynch rounds. If you did manage to lynch someone, and it's not the Sheriff or the Bandito, you just continue with the next lynching round. You're in the west, so there's no rest till the last man falls.

If you lynch someone and it's not the Sheriff or the Bandito, I won't reveal the role. However if a bounty hunter was killed, the other bounty hunter can always claim that a bounty hunter has just been lynched. I won't confirm anything.
In my experience a succesful lynch has happened once, when we were fed up with the early shootouts, and decided to lynch someone right away. Turned out to be the bandito. Pure luck.
When you look at this information, technically, you can play this game for weeks and weeks without ever killing someone. It's just that there will always be someone whose patience grows thin and grabs for his gun.

The first phase stops when someone draws his or her gun and shoots someone else. You can do that any time you want, even right now, even though I would advise you not to yet. You can shoot someone by sending me a pm which, in whatever context, tells me you're gunning down Player X.
Drawing your gun means the entire town will enter Phase 2: the Good Part of the Game.

When this happens, I will announce the standoff has been broken and that everyone has 24 hours to give me their shooting orders. You can choose not to fire a shot during the shootout, but most people simply do shoot, cuz it's great. The unarmed deputy is the only poor guy who doesn't really enjoy this phase.

If the 24 hours are up, I will post who has been shot during this shootout. These players now are dead (obviously). Shooting orders will be treated chronologically, so if...
X first shoots Y
and Y then shoots Z,
Z is lucky, since Y was killed before he fired his shot, thus his shooting orders are negated.

If the sheriff or the bandito are NOT dead in the first shootout, I will not reveal any roles. You just get another 24 hours to fire your next shot, after which I will again post whoever died, etcetera. It's not like you can go back to lynching after such massacre.

Any questions left?

I think we should all bandwagon on someone offline so that way they have no chance of calling a shootout when they're at L-1 :D
