Should be an option to say no in this poll...

But I have to confess I am mostly with alstergren on this one - bad language allows some of us to express ourselves more easily. Please don't give me any crap about my opinion meaning that I am not smart enough to use other vocabulary. These so called bad words are there to be used so why not use them?!!!

Still Alstergren - don't get yourself too worked up about it

Yes every time I hear the word nigger I think. "Thats a word that's there to be used."

(I refrained from using the "N-word" for clarity. I know that might confuse some people.)

Hmmm... the "N-word"? Now I'm confused, guess you're thinking along these lines...

Q: What is the word that starts with N that you never ever would want to call a black man?

A: Neighbour.

But, jokes aside - I find it strange that some people have such a problem with certain words. Fine, don't use the "F-word" if you don't want to, but don't tell other people not to use it. That's just weird.

I guess I'm more of a "takes a village" kind of guy. But to be clear I don't necessarily want to outlaw swearing on CC. I just kind of wondering who would want to use in the first place in front of kids.

Lets say you were at the mall and some big burly dude had his little kids with him. Would you start dropping the f-bomb real loud in front of his kids? I know I wouldn't. I think people tend to grow a pair when there in a consequence free environment like the internet.

to answer your question, no I don't make a habit of educating small children in the arts of profanity. I just think that any 'kid' out there who is surfing the net logging into websites to play random games and just generally exploring cyberspace unchecked is going to encounter a hell of a lot worse language than I'd ever use in one of these games, so if I lose ten territories on one turn that I totally didn't expect to lose and I want to throw a 'Shitballs!' into the game chat, it shouldn't be a big deal. As I stated, that sort of stuff can clearly be overdone, and it's specifically stated in the rules for this site that verbal abuse of fellow players is prohibited, so I think the site rules regarding game chat:

-"Trash-talking" can be a fun element of the game and we take a liberal stance on what is allowed to be said in game chat. If one player offends another we generally do not want to get involved. However, in cases of extreme obscenity or extreme harassment (in our judgement) we may take disciplinary action against the offending member.

If you find yourself in a game with someone who offends you, simply add the member in question to your Ignore List and his/her comments will disappear."-

are completely sufficient.

I think we pretty much agree on this, and I TOTALLY agree with your last statement. As a matter of fact, I read a magazine article recently detailing sociological studies that had been done on this exact issue and found that something like 90% of people are far more belligerent online than they ever would be in their real life.

Did I come anywhere close to Tahitiwahini's verbosity????

Suffice it to say that many of us, myself included, do not use profanity during a game because of the children. This is a decision i have made, and i don't need anyone else dictating to me what decisions to make here. Those of you who don't want kids exposed to profanity, do you let them watch TV? Kind of inconsistent then wouldn't you say?

If somebody is using persistant bad language in game chat, I simply think what an arsehole, and put it down to ignorance. I don't like playing with arseholes, so will avoid in the future. over a period of time this person will find it increasingly difficult to get a game.

That's just a bullshit opinion. Few people would even consider such an alien aproach to language.

i like that opinion

Well. Too bad. Languages are not frozen in time. They develop over the years, and you're not in a position to tell other people how to use their language. If you don't approve of any use, walk away. It's really that simple.

Awesome

totally agreed, also I learn new "dirty" words every year from my younger cousins and they're in they're young teens!

anyone who is concerned at all about the exposure of kiddies in the games to naughty language should take a look through the thread in social lounge II regarding the reasons why anal sex is OK with god. It is a perfect example all the far-worse-than-profanity things that kids with unchecked internet access see all the time. I don't think the occasional 'fuckbeans!' is really a big deal, personally.

Well the forum is different from the games. I may wax profane in the forum, since that is meant to be a place where ideas are exchanged and language is the medium. In the games however, i don't think it will hurt us to tone it down somewhat. But we don't need any "sir" sebstar types trying to impose censorship on us. For the most part the real profanity during games that i've seen comes from older kids.

b.k. barunt,

Don't know what you have against SirSebstar, but as far as this thread goes he's had one post:

SirSebstar wrote:your options to choose from in your poll leave out some things to be desired.. e.g. no bad language at all...

I take it he was expressing his opinion. I don't see the censorship, sorry.

You don't seem to think SirSebstar has a right to express his opinion. While that's certainly not censorship, it's hardly a commendable attitude, is it?

tahitiwini, you seem to have a penchant for putting words in one's mouth. I never said "sir" sebstar couldn't offer his opinion, i said i didn't want him imposing his viewpoints on others, which stems from past behavior on his part. What's it to you? Why do you feel called on to defend him, and why can't he defend himself? If i were to say "i'm done here", you would hear a flurry of words from him, but otherwise i'm sure he appreciates your standing in for him.

Well. Yes. But the guy is just trying to be a smart-ass by making stupid points by misrepresenting what people post. I hope he doesn't believe in what he writes himself, 'cause if he does, there is a serious communication problem here.

Somehow, wanting people to mind their own business is regarded as an act of a censorship attempt... Jez...

Don't want to put words in people's mouths so here goes:

Evidence please.

b.k. barunt wrote:What's it to you?

Sorry, didn't know I needed to get your permission to comment on one of your posts. Say did you happen to get SirSebstar's permission before you commented on his?

b.k. barunt wrote:if i were to say "i'm done here", you would hear a flurry of words from him.

Sounds like something that could be empirically proved one way or the other quite easily. Say it and see what happens.

You seem to have a penchant for telling people what they can and can't do. Where does that come from?

Can I ask for evidence or will that be construed by you as an attempt on my part to censor your opinions. If I've really misrepresented what people post I guess I could have saved a lot of time by not quoting their exact words.

We can just agree to let the readers of the thread judge who has the serious communication problem, shall we?
