the dice

Postby Colonelkiev on Mon Aug 30, 2010 1:04 pm

Hello all - i'm a fairly new member here, only played 11 games so far. So forgive my question if it's simple. In several games, the dice are clearly not in my favor. In a Malta game, I lost 17 straight armies to a country that had 2 on it. That was the most glaring example, but twice since then, I have lost 8 armies in a row while my opponent hasn't lost one. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions for me?

thanks

You'll win some, you lose some. In general, you'll remember your losses more then your wins. Even if you believe that the dice were clearly not in your favour, it's quite possible that considering all rolls by everyone in the entire game, your dice were about equal to your opponent.

If it helps with your peace of mind, you can use Dice Analyzer to check this.

Something that may also help is avoiding the auto-assault button. If you only use the normal assault button, you won't get better dice, but you'll be able to stop when things start to go wrong. This way, if you are getting the worst case scenario, you can avoid losing the game to it.

Another thing to keep in mind is to always have a backup plan. Don't assume that you will win a battle, no matter how strongly it's in your favour, unless it's the only way to win. Always assume the worst case scenario, and you'll never be dissappointed.

Also, obligatory link to an excellent post.

I've never played Risk before except for on CC. How do you tell how many armies you win or loose?

you will always attack with all your troops minus 1 who is guarding your country and them maxed to 3.
So if you have a stack of 10, only 3 can attack, if you have a stack of 3, only 2 can attack.
the defense always defends with 2 dice unless he has only one army, then he defends with 1.
if you attack you will want to attack with a stack of 4 or bigger, cause only 3 can be used. in an 3 dice vs 2 dice situation there is a rough 30% chance on a total win (2 troops killed), total loss(2 troops lost) or a draw (1 each).
also when you throw 3 dice, the lowest gets discarded

There is a box around the dice highlighting which dice won and which dice lost attackers dice are to the left if the vs defense's dice is on the right

Thanks. I guess streaky dice are a way of life here. I don't ever see my opponents take their turns, so I am unaware that they would also have streaks like this.
