A question for the old-timers

Postby Master Fenrir on Fri Aug 06, 2010 10:14 pm

You've been around long enough to acquire a nice rack of medals, to get a decent score, etc. What's your motivation for sticking around? More medals and a higher score? CC friends? Fun? Masochism?

Over the last 3.5-4ish years I have been a cook and a colonel, my score means very little to me nowadays, I know what kind of player I am and I don't need my score to validate that. I might reconsider that position and really try to increase my rank one day for fun or for sport but, with the scoring system, medals, not everyone having all the available tools, etc... the way all that is set up, it actually encourages farming and discourages open competition the way it used to be and I miss that....I love the invite feature don't mistake me, however public games are virtually non-existent, creating a somewhat unrealistic representation of an individual players' true skill. My point to that statement is that I met new people all the time (before invites) out of necessity and learned good team play because I never had the same partners, that was fun to me. I guess that could be argued fairly easily because people tend to stay within their comfort zone no matter what they do....and now I am the same way actually, I would rather play within my circle of partners if you will, (lol, where it's safe) it is still fun to me but its a different experience.

I stay for the clan.
I stay because new maps are fun to learn and my most prized achievement is my 100% crossmap (very close to at least 10 UD on all 164 actually)
I stay because of the friends I have made. :-$
I stay because every once and awhile I get into one hell of a dogfight in a game and I really enjoy the competition.
I stay because winning a game is still a rush.
I stay because my regular partners crack me up and it's refreshing everyday to visit the (clan) forum, those guys a re funny bastards.

I find myself looking for more ways to be involved, I would like, for example to volunteer as a mod or something for team CC; I suppose I am thinking if I broaden my experience, the excitement and "new site smell" will linger, longer.

Medals did it for me for awhile but, some of the ways one can achieve a medal (really I mean multiple medals, ie: tourney creation) makes them less "valuable" in my mind now. The dice lately, make me want to throw my laptop, seriously. The cheating and the ridiculously stupid play from some users make me want to light my hair on fire and then beat it out with a hammer. The point system is antiquated. The GD forum is a mess with nonsense. Among other things..............

I am starting to understand why you are asking, I'll think on it more and get back to you MARF.

One more reason I stay....it's cheaper than the bar and I get in way less trouble playing CC all the time.

What is an old-timer? I'm not sure if I qualify but regardless of some of my complaints, I still enjoy winning or losing. It's a good game and I've met some friends that I really value, even those who don't play much anymore.

cc friends. I mostly hang out in the mcgill usergroup and shoot the shit with those guys. I go to my other usergroups and my clan forum once in a while and say hi to those guys every now and then. I even stray into GD when I'm really bored. A student of mine from the spankademy pm'd me for a few quads today, so I might even play a few games, but score and medals aren't really much. Although medals are nice cause you can loose them.

For the posters. Granted, many come and go, but what they bring to the site (and to some converstions on here) are invalueable.

Plus, I would like to keep my spot as one of the top posters on here.

I have had several holidays from the site 6 months. Probably 3 of them. I once had a high score. Now I do not. It's the game. Online it's easier to play than on that board game that bears no resemblance.

EDIT: To keep it fresh I try and play the maps I'm not good at. 8-[

Just going to take a few off L M S... My clans really the only reason i still play, also won a year's premium through a tourney so playing until that runs out. As he also stated, public games arent really public anymore, and i sort of miss that part of the site. I remember searching through pages of games trying to find a solid player with openings on their teams, but now almost everyone reserves their entire teams if not the opposing team as well. It gets more and more difficult to meet newer people with this system, and i kind of regret that...

But i still find my fun. :)

I'm a competition junkie. And I like turn-based strategy games the most for my competition fix. This fits that bill fairly nicely. Oh, and tournaments. And random map games. Obviously, I don't care much about rank.

well one reason is cause i dont wanna deadbeat games that im in from when i was premium ;p

but also its just a fun place to play the game, and for me since i dont play too much anymore its always exciting when i run into one of the guys i used to play with often 2-3 years ago.

score isnt much to me... yeah i try to win all my games but im much less into score than when i was a couple years ago.

EDIT: am i even an old timer? i dont even know ^_^

It's a nice way to kill time at work. And I rather do this than crosswords. :D

My clan, for one. I look forward to reading what's up in the fora. Second, when work is slow, CC makes the day go by a lot faster. If and when work picks up again, my CC time will start to shrink which is fine as well. Oh and I still want to get my nuclear gold, but 400 games takes a long time.

My motivation that keeps me playing games is an attempt to get (and keep) my score at a place where it has never been before---which I've been doing for the last month or two! I'm not much of a medal hunter---but I am pleased when I get one.

My motivation that keeps on the website in general is seeing how it progresses and changes---maps, tournaments, features, etc. Plus, the Off Topics is the Most Trusted Name in News---on the Internet.

#1 my friends in my group xiGames.....some of the coolest people I have met, including my 47 years' experience in real life....lol.

#2 playing the game....always loved it, still do. I play my xi brothers / sisters 95% of the time so my rank really doesnt change and I could care less (until the [expletive deleted] dice drive me down to a 2 or 1 striper...then I have plenty to say  ).

#3 harassing lack aboot his Poutine addiction

Sounds pretty much like its unanimous.....our collegues are whats important here ;o)
