Requirements for Posting JPGs Changed?

Postby Woodruff on Tue Aug 03, 2010 2:32 am

Hello...back in the dark ages, I hosted a bracket-style tournament in which I would upload the tournament brackets to the initial posts of the tournament, so that folks could see how it was progressing visually (I used ImageShack). This worked REALLY well.

Well, I'm back to hosting another tournament of the same nature...but when I go to post the bracket JPG files (still using ImageShack), they don't work as they used to. Now, all I get is a little tiny thumbnail of the bracket, rather than a good READABLE picture of it...you can't even "click on it to enlarge it" without it going to a wholly separate page. Has the forum software changed to impede this? Is there a good way I can get around this? I'm happy to switch to another free hosting site, if that's the "fix" (though that would seem odd).

To give some examples:

This is how I did it for my previous tournaments (no longer works):
[ bigimg ]http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/2355/uploadbracketatop.jpg[/ bigimg ]

If I try to link directly to the ImageShack page that holds that picture, it doesn't show any picture at all (not even the thumbnail).

And if I try it with the [ img ] tag instead of [ bigimg ], I get this error: "It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image."

Thus I am forced to use the ImageShack-recommended (thumbnail-only):
[ url=http://img527.imageshack.us/i/uploadbracketatop.jpg/ ][ img ]http://a.imageshack.us/img527/2355/uploadbracketatop.jpg[ /img ][/url]

Now, I'm sure it's just a matter of my own ignorance getting in the way, so could someone please clue me in as to how I can now post these JPG files as pictures, rather than thumbnails? You will have my undying gratitude!

I tried a couple of those URL's and they came up with broken links, try loading the pictures onto the site again. The should work when put into the URL bar, and they didn't for me. The only thing I can think of is maybe the image was corrupted when uploading. -rds

No, no...those are only formatting examples. The actual files aren't there. I'm just trying to find out if the formatting I'm using is no longer acceptable (particularly on my "used to" setting, since that would actually allow me to post more than just a stinking thumbnail (which I hate for my tournament brackets, as they're not very user-friendly that way).

You need the actual image URL, not the URL of the page containing the image.

You can get the image URL by right-clicking the image and selecting "copy image location" (in firefox.)

Also in imageshack, after you upload the image, the site offers you "direct link to the image" and this is the same as the image url.

I tried that...I ended up with the same thing...just the thumbnail version of it as a link to the actual file.

I don't get that option offered to me...I just tried it again to check. Are you sure you're thinking of ImageShack? Is there maybe another free hosting site that would be more user-friendly for me in this regard?

To show you what I'm getting, go to my tournament thread and look at the 3rd through 6th posts at:

Your image source is the thumb, not the full size pic. Try this.... :D

Perfect...now, my next question is...where did you get that information (for the innards of the link)? What painfully obvious thing am I overlooking? That way I can...you know...be able to replicate it. <grin>

Ah ha! jpcloet, you clued me in to it...I think I've finally figured it out. I still don't really understand what changed, but I think I've got the hang now. Thanks everyone for the help in this thread - I do appreciate it.

Yep, that was precisely the thing I rather haphazardly found by pure chance. But thank you, because that is exactly the answer. I do appreciate it.
