Eliminate "invite" for Tournament Games [Implemented]

Postby AgentSmith88 on Sun May 09, 2010 9:02 pm

I have had players invite friends using the invite button to tournament games of mine. I would like to see the option to use the invite button for tournament games reserved for the tournament organizer only (maybe as part of privledges?) This will help out organizers, but it will also keep newer tournament players from making mistakes and inviting people who don't belong in their game(s).

"The dice ARE random, lots and lots of analysis has been done on them both internally and by community members."

Be sure you're informing your organizers when people are doing this, and if the same people are doing it, make sure I find out in order to look into the situation.

Makes sense.

I had it happen in a tournament i was organizing as well. No offense intended NS, but what would you do about it? I just had to remake the game and inform everyone what was going on. This suggestion should help out organizers and those players who don't know any better.

I could make sure organizers aware of players who are causing problems, I could ask organizers to kick those players out of their tournaments, or I could even give them official warnings or forum vacations for doing it. If it's a persistent problem, I can push lack directly to get this suggestion implemented more quickly.

Good to know.

(I did kick the player who did it in my tournament - more for his attitude about the situation than anything)

Thank you night strike for taking care of this quickly :D

As of now, the issue is in your hands. Should it persist, then please make it known to me so we can push this suggestion along.

Can we bang the hammer on this one?

Couldn't there be legitimate situations where it is helpful for players to invite others to tournament games, like when you have team in a tourney??

but i thought a tournament organizer invites everyone to the correct teams anyways so as to avoid confusion.

not really, because if it's a tourney where you have a set team (just a normal dubs/trips/quads tourney) the TO does everything. In some tournaments, the team captains do get to pick lineups, but unless you're the TO you can't invite players to games unless you personally are already in the game (just like a public/private game). Since the Team Captain isn't in all the games, invites wouldn't work, or at least not for all the games.

Darwins_Bane wrote:but i thought a tournament organizer invites everyone to the correct teams anyways so as to avoid confusion.

most of the time that's true, but there are cases where it's not.

As far as I know, it's a nearly-non-issue as the case in this thread is the only one I've heard of. If you want to make changes, go ahead, but I don't think it's big enough of a problem.

that's sort of true, I have seen it happen twice before this though. Once the two people involved were multis, so were both kicked from the tournament soon after. The other was in a tournament where the TO was doing nothing, so a player took it in his own hands

viewtopic.php?f=91&t=119065&start=15#p2636771 - multis (actually, looking at it, he may not have been invited, but he did join since his multi was given the pw)
viewtopic.php?f=92&t=109862&start=105#p2597325 - TO inactive, ended up having to be rescued

For everybody: if this is happening much more than I thought, I need you all to inform your organizers and myself. I can't check every tournament without being informed of issues.

I'm in a triples tournament, where only the team captains get an auto-join link to the game. I use the invite button to invite the rest of my team.

Absolutely, it is. In fact, I can think of no negatives at all to the idea, so I'm not sure why it's meeting resistance. It seems like it would take a load off of not only tournament organizers, but also Night Strike...a win-win.

By the same token, it would be simple for the tournament organizer to handle this, unless there was some reason that the team would be fluid (changing from game to game). But even in a "track meet" tournament I was in that had several members in a team and only a few compete in each event, the team captain simply notified the organizer who would be in it, and they took care of it.

Perhaps create a tourney "Black list", ie a thread where TO's can add a name to a list with a short explanaition why (s)he wouldn't want his/her worst enemy to have to put up with player X in a tourney said worst enemy is organising =)

that AND implement this option. An overwhelming majority of TOs send all invites themselves do they not?

Interesting suggestion, but PLEASE DON'T run with it. As Night Strike has stated, please contact him if people are abusing the tournament invite system. I for one, would find it difficult/a lot more time consuming to run tournaments if this suggestion was implemented.

All of my tournaments I run are team tournaments. Some are mixed tournaments with dbs, trips, quads. I send game links with pw to team captains, who then invite their teams. For example a mixed round robin tournament with 8teams involves. The creation of 8doubles, 8triples, 8quads(the way I run some tournaments). That would be 32, 48, 64 = 144 invites that I would have to send..... Plus all the pm traffic, asking team captains to assign players, then waiting for their responses, the sending the invites, etc.

If this suggestion were implemented(mainly due to a few bad eggs, who can just be tournament banned), I would stop running complex fun tournaments which offer players choice in home maps, team allocations etc. With work, running clan wars, and my turns, I just wouldn't have the time to do the community service of running interesting tournaments.

Please consider the above folks.

For BoganGod and other tournament directors like him, this suggestion would limit his ability to provide quality events for the players to participate in. I think, based on the example provided, implementing this suggestion would cause problems.

How many of these Team Captains actually use the Invite function when they give the games to their team, especially the games they are not in themselves? I guess that the large majority of them PM the games/passwords using one of the post-tags that can get players into games automatically.

ORGANIZERS, not directors. Only gold names are directors. Sorry, pet peeve of a distinction that is important in our tournament forums.

But wasn't it said that Team Captains would still be able to invite? Wouldn't that fix it?
