Make some maps seasonal to help boost their use

Postby Queen_Herpes on Tue Jul 20, 2010 3:30 pm

I like seasonal maps and the ability to play them at only certain times of the year. Some of the maps out there are rarely played and I believe moving them to a "seasonal" status might create new interest in the maps moved to seasonal.

Concise description:

Specifics/Details:
  • Clear from above

How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • Gives another map to look forward to
  • Encourages mapmakers to come up with other seasonal maps

note: Please lock up World Cup as planned. Perhaps open it once a year in summer as four years is a long time to wait for our European friends.
edit: removed "Halloween Hallows" from the Subject Line to edit the idea to be concerned with a general concept as opposed to a specific map at this time.

More to come, I have to bring some of my ideas from the responses to this post to this original post.

The Halloween Hollows map was not produced as a limited edition map like St. Patrick's Day or the World Cup 2010. It was produced by Cairnswk with Foundry feedback, in the Map Foundry, and thus, is available all year round like any non-limited edition map.

However, future seasonsal/limited edition maps may make their way into our selection from time to time.

Yes, I understand the reasoning behind why it was originally placed in the "365-day" pool. I'm suggesting it be removed from that pool and placed in seasonal.

As usual, lord voldemort demonstrates his inability to read. Must be some high standards used to employ the volunteers on this site.

I am not looking to get rid of the map, I am suggesting we place it in seasonal mode and bring it out at Halloween. However, since you didn't read that the first time, I don't expect you to read it this time.

I agree with LV that it's unfair to cairns who developed the map for it to be used fully like any other regular map on the site.
Important Tournament Notice

The data for ALL of my tournaments has potentially been lost. I am working to recover it but as I am away on business all of this week, there will be some delay. Sincere apologies.

Perhaps we should ask cairnswk and see what he wants to do with the map.

What he says should go.

I was gonna say leave it up since he worked on it just as much as every other mapmaker who has made a normal map, so should get to keep his map all year just like everyone else, but now I agree with you. He's going to want it up I assume, but on the off chance that he would like it just for Halloween, I would be happier too

I agree with the fair QH for once. I would like to see this moved to a seasonal map, pending evidence contary to my hunch that it is a less popular map. Perhaps it would be useful to get some data on how played it is. Can a mod or admin help with that?

Yes, cairns worked hard on it, but he also donated it to the site. the site should do with it as it wishes.

If cairns changed the name of the map to "Graveyard Hallows"... there would not be a call to take it down, i still play it from time to time and would miss playing on it if it was taken down... unlike maps like the st pattys or WC map which i won't miss at all.

What i mean is just because i map has "pearl harbor" in its name... doesnt mean it should only be played on Dec 7th.

I actually think that is a great idea. I love the pearl harbor map too much to suggest it myself, but if we were to only be able to play it around the anniversary of the attacks, I mean, I would probably play hundreds of games on that map in the week surrounding the date. Stalingrad lasted too long, sot here is no date associated with it. WWII Iwo Jima lasted a specific number of days, perhaps to memorialize that battle, we could be limited to playing from the anniversary of the shelling through the final day of the battle (which incidentally was kind of sad because the Japanese either committed suicide or performed banzai charges and I think only a handful of Japanese were taken prisoner - their entire army was taken out.)

That really is a good idea, though. Seasonal Battle Maps. I think a lot of players would pine for those maps and play them a bunch (amounting to more competition on those maps overall) during hte time they are available. Could help the marketing of this site and the marketing of the maps to have them available "for a limited time." I mean, look at the buzz over the fact that the "World Cup" map is getting shuttered for who knows how long. Perhaps Stalingrad could be a wintertime map as the crippling effect of the battle was felt most by the Germans during the winter?

13 colonies could be accessible around the 4th of July.
D-Day could be played around the anniversary of the landings.
Soviet Union could be played around May Day.

You could probably make an argument for each national map to be played on or around its national holidays.

I'm just sayin'

If Cairnswk changed the mapname, the map would still have aspects associated most closely with Halloween anyways, I mean, do you see references to witches, goblins, bats, and such at any other time of year?

Well, that's too bad.

I was thinking about another map, WWII Gazala. That battle was over the course of two weeks, right? Perhaps we celebrate that battle by opening it up over those two weeks every year?

I like making people lol int he middle of the night, but, no I'm fuserious.

I really think people will get more excited about certain maps and play them more during one week of the year than they would throughout the rest of the year. It would really piss off policeboy though if we did this with the Montreal Map.

Hm, your argument is that the map is not played enough. So could it be safe to assume that you want all maps that are not played enough (unset standarts) to be of limited use to the public?

Suggestions are meant to enhance CC. I just dont understand how this is suppossed to do that. I could see someone starting a campaign to make the limited edition maps availible year round, since in theory more options are better. But taking the map away, so that you are more excited to play it on halloween is sort of amusing. Perhaps you could take it up with the map maker and tell him what you think and present your case to him. Who knows, maybe he will see it like you do and will want his map to be seasonal. I just think this is between CC and the map maker.

I too like seasonal maps, but why not just make a different Halloweener map? Just like Andy said, Halloween Hallows was NOT meant to be a seasonal map, so make a new one... other maps are in the process of the map foundry like the Christmas one... they just are hard projects and take time...

Well, its clear you enjoy making suggestions to allow less options for players and giving CC less maps, but we at CC enjoy the massive variety, and suggest that if you do not enjoy playing certain maps at certain times, that you refrain from doing so.

If fact, I suggest you play whatever maps you want, whenever you want, instead of suggesting what maps we enjoy playing them, or when we should be allowed to play them.

Perhaps a suggestion to achieve your supposed objective of it being played more often, is to make more halloween hallows tourneys around the time of halloween. No doubt more will play the map then, and the rest of the time, players can practice on it at will. No harm done, objective achieved, and no one inconvenienced or limited in any way.

We already have a suggestion asking to unlock all "seasonal" maps because everyone likes playing them too much. I don't think you are going to get a majority of people agreeing with this.

you continue to amaze me. Perhaps I should play another speedy with you? But lets make sure it isn't a seasonal map. Then we can pine for it for a few months.

1) If you want another map to look forward to for yourself, you can manually limit yourself from playing that map except when you consider it seasonal. By doing so, you will be able to more "look forward to" the map and yet the rest of us won't be kept from playing it..

2) You believe that making a map LESS playable will cause mapmakers to want to make more of them? I can't say that I follow your logic there.

OK, my turn to comment.

Queen_Herpes, I can understand where you are coming from calling for seasonal maps.

This concept i recall was briefly mentioned when Halloween Hollows was being developed, however, it is now too far back to recall the outcome and I am not going to back track to search for that.

Halloween Hollows was developed very specifically towards the Holloween theme, but it was also developed with all the graveyards, witch etc aspects (ghoolish aspects) as a map to show other mapmakers to think outside the normal square for subject matter for maps. In fact many of my maps were developed for this reason.

At the time of devlopment, there were no seasonal maps in play, and some of these came into being without the knowledge of any of the mapmakers in the foundry, and certainly without their participation. This still continues i beleive.

I went through the foundry process, as did all my maps, and while i think it is a good idea to have some seasonal maps, I am not in favour of having any of my maps, whether they commemorate battle anniversaries or otherwise, in this seasonal grouping.

I wish Halloween Hollows to remain as a map that can be played all year round, and if CC wishes to celebrate Halloween with use of that map for a week of festivities, i will not stop that process, but will give it my support. :)
