Getting players for tournament?

Postby WorldCup4James on Mon Jun 21, 2010 3:03 pm

What are some good ways to get players to join my tournament?
I've made a signature, invited a couple of my friends, and invited people on live chat.
Any other ideas? Thanks

posting in the tournament section is always good. be concise, precise and take settings/map/size tournament people want to play.
oh and if its just exposure, try to get an interview.
other then that, you are doing it already.

definitely. It's agonizing trying to get people to join your first couple tourneys, but once you've shown that you can and will run them all the way through (finish 2 or 3), then you will find that people are much more willing to join ;)

What do you mean by an interview? Thanks for the advice

What happens after 30 days, when the tournament is removed from the list? Can you re-post the tournament?

Am I allowed to make a brand new tournament thread, have exactly the same information, and just give it a different title so that people won't have to rejoin?

ok this tournement you are running looks ok set up wise but the problem is you are asking for 136 players maybe ask jrh or ha or jr to help you as a second organiser or dont bother with it just now because if you do manage to get 136 players you will come across about 20 that dont actually sign up for any games so you need to get reserves in place. i think this tournement is going to be to complicated for you on your first attempt. try a couple of the smaller ones like i have said to u because the main problems you are going to have in this one are

1)not all players will go ahead and join the games after signing so quite a few reserves are needed

2)you have no track record of running tournaments and are quite new to the site

3)you will find it hard setting up games on these settings all different p/words for games and having to mail all players.

i have now run 4 tournements just getting to have 60 players in mine and have picked easy settings for it while i get used to it.

all this being said welcome to the world of tournement organising

Welcome to organizing. As Eddie mentioned starting smaller is always a good idea for your first couple

One of the ongoing issues in Tournament land is there are people who post a tournament for play and update the sign ups for a while and then just let it go. This can be extremely frustrating for a tournament player and so you'll find that many of the players will only join those from organizers with established track records. Its nothing against the new TO but rather experience saying that many don't follow through and a once bitten twice shy mentality. What this means also is that some of the best and most reliable tournament players aren't going to sign up for you and your players (some, a minority for sure but some) will not follow through and actually join or play the games they're supposed to.

One of the things I sometimes do when I'm trying to fill a larger tournament is I actively recruit players who don't play a lot of tournaments but who are currently playing games on settings similar to what I'm looking for. For instance, if I have a specific map that the tournament is playing on I'll look for all the active games on that map that match my settings and drop a PM to the player currently playing in those games. Many will just ignore your PM and while i haven't actually tracked my response rate I think its about 10% for these PMs. I don't do this for every tournament of course but for a couple of my larger ones I've done it.

Yeah, I'm also recruiting players from specific maps.

Actually, you can use the same title too. The 30-day rule is in place because some people will join a tournament and then forget about it. In order to protect them, if the tournament has not started within a quick enough time period (30 days), they get a new chance to sign up if they still desire to play. You can even PM all the people who previously signed up.

So I can P.M. then, but still everyone has to join again? Everything can't just "carry over" automatically to the new post?

Correct. The rules state that everyone has to be signed up in the thread in order to actually be in that tournament. This process gives the players the opportunity to back out of the tournament if it took much longer to fill than they were anticipating.
