For variable player games, should the number of players in a game be decided by...

number of players after a set time increment?

a set number of players join, as determined by the computer when the game is made, but kept secret until that # of players join.

variable player games

Make games that will start after a set amount of time without regard to the number of players who have joined

Specifics:
We could set games to start after 24 hours, and then have no idea how many players will have joined by that time. This would be like when you play a game with your friends IRL. it's not "ok, we need 5 players!" it's "who wants to play?" then you end up with any where from 3 to 6 players.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
Ever since random map was implemented, people have wanted to randomize other settings. Well, randomizing number of players seems a bit dumb, honestly. So, here's how you could do it. This could be the player # version of random map. :D

i like it, but a bit different. Not to change your idea, but i think that if the point is to be random, that when the game is made, that there is already a set number, so no one has any idea how many players will end up in the game when they sign up. might be a 1v1, or end up a 8 player game.

But that takes away from the RL simulation you want to make. :-k

Don't tell anybody how many players are in the game when they are joining. game would show up like others, but with a nice fat question mark where the players names should be.

yep...because if we do as edwin says....at the moment of joining you'll know how many players will play while the other settings you'll know after the game has started(if everything is random)...so this idea is better also for people who wants to play right now, because you can't be sure how many time will take to fill up your game of 8 or 2players...and makes it much interesting not knowing how many people will play...

of course what happens if:

-No one joins? So you're alone...game gets deleted?
-If you put assassin or teminator you need minimum 3 players
-What happens if in doubles for example joins 5 players?
-or in quadruples 3 players(maybe deleted like the first one)
-If in a map like AoR or Feudal joins 8 persons
-Or that in any map joins more than 8 persons(as you said there will be a question so you don't know how many players are there)

Well the last two options it can be arrenged if you put "up to maximum of ...) and here the player can choose and when reaches this limit will also start independetly of how many time is left

well, yes, the computer would know who has joined, and keep everything in order. games that reached max. would start early, that just goes without saying. And, yes, if a game doesn't reach a required number, it could be dropped. or time could be extended, and the player who started the game would have the option to drop if it took to long. the point is, you would end up playing more than just 6 man feudal, or 3 man classic, because the # of players is undetermined. it would be interesting, imho. work out a few kinks, and we could have an awesome system.

Well, im guessing the generator wouldnt go against itself and make a 5 player doubs. Or any of the other things darth mentioned.

This is nothing like the original suggestion however, so we got sidetrack in the awesomeness of brainstorming. I suggest either changing the tittle to match what we are discussing here, or simply getting back on track about setting times for casual games.

Good suggs musn't die! So, here's what I'm seeing. it could be a number of players that the computer decides upon when the game is made (a number that fits the game style), but nobody is aloud to know until that number is reached, OR it could be the number of players who join after a day (or some such time increment) and any extra players (e.g. person 7 in a dubs game) will be automatically dropped from the game, and the game starts.
