done correctly, lethal injection is painless.
This is how it works in the USA:
Three injections.
#1 - Sodium thiopental: to induce a state of unconsciousness intended to last while the other two injections take effect. This drug used to be used for general anesthesia and when a "medically induced coma" was necessary.
#2 - Pancuronium/Tubocurarine: to stop all muscle movement except the heart. This causes muscle paralysis, collapse of the diaphragm, and would eventually cause death by asphyxiation.
#3 - Potassium chloride: to stop the heart from beating, and thus cause death. ie: Cardiac Arrest.
As you can see, when done correctly the person is essentially comatose and unable to feel pain.

We know this because the first drug was used for years in countless surgeries, and nobody woke up screaming from being operated on. While the body may convulse from the 2nd and 3rd injections, they don't feel a thing.
