Rearrange the new stats

Postby stahrgazer on Mon Nov 30, 2009 10:15 am

Rearrange the new stats so that spoils and estimated new deploys show before the terr/army details.

Concise description:
[Rearrange in order of most pertinent for the greatest number of rounds.]
[Rearrange to: Player Spoils Due Regions Troops]
[Option B: Player Due Spoils Regions Troops]

Specifics:
[The current new stats show: Player Regions Troops Due Spoils ]
[How many regions an oppoent has may not be as important to determining most moves as whether a cash is viable or how many armies he will deploy next turn ]
[How many armies the opponent is due could arguably more important for most rounds than how many spoils he has, so that could be another arrangement.]
[While the other data (regions, overall number of troops) is good for viewing overall strength or figuring out whether it's worth it to try to take that opponent out of the game, that only comes into the picture in later rounds.]
[So the suggestion is to rearrange the new stats to either put what is considered most (probably Due) or what the users are familiar with seeing (Spoils) before the number of Regions owned or total Troops count.]

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
[Familiarity - players are used to being able to see spoils first, then either checking the log or using BoB to figure out the potential new deploys. Those two things are generally primary for most rounds.]
[Enjoyability - the current stats layout requires that one scroll over to get to the most crucial data for most rounds; having to always scroll is aggravating and unnecessary, especially given these stats were added to increase enjoyment.]

I think "Due" should appear to right of "Troops", because that makes it clearer that "Due" means "Troops Due". Otherwise we'd have to label it "Troops Due" and there will be more horizontal scrolling.

Good and not-so-good point. Each is its own column. When speaking of tables in general, presuming that the name from a former column applies to the next column is not usually recommended practice.

I can see ways to handle each concern, though, your point, and my initial suggestion.

One option moves around so Spoils is first (to the right of the name, rather than left of the name like it used to be)... but still first/closest; then the "Troops" and "Due" like you're suggesting, which leaves massed armies rather than expected deploys next to Spoils so if someone wanted those stats, scrolling is more likely needed.
Spoils Troops Due Regions
This still puts spoils closer to the player name, and number of regions, which is likely only needed in later parts of the game, at the end - and these were my main points to the suggestion.

Another Option is to change the word "Due" from the "troops" assumed or read from the prior column, to the word "Deploys;" and maybe to avoid confusion as to whether troops means available to deploy or already on the map, change the word "Troops" to "Massed" or something, like so:

Spoils Deploys Massed Regions

Changing the words offers the option that if the powers that be decide knowing how many deploys are expected is more important than spoils, then instead of Spoils listed closest because it used to be close, things are listed in a different order of priority with less confusion, but still more in line with what's needed to plan the attack:
Deploys Spoils Massed Regions

Overall, the new feature is nice; creates more slug per game, but a little more RAM will fix that soon for me anyway... and if I don't want to look, I don't have to.

The point to this suggestion is just that I think the change would be nicer if things were arranged in order of a) data most likely to be needed, or b) in order of more familiar. I think most would agree that expected Deploys and Spoils are the things looked at most frequently in games for most turns; overall strength important when considering taking someone out; total regions needed mainly to calc deploys (which this new feature already does) or when debating the feasibility of taking someone out... so overall strength and spread over a map come into play less for the average turn.

Why did the spoils data have to change its look anyways? The new system is very annoying to view how many spoils everyone has in a row of numbers. The old way was MUCH better for spoils alone.

I hear you, Bones, but since they were adding other information, it may have looked odd: "why spoils on the left without a label and everything else on the right with a label?" (New players wouldn't know spoils were on the left without a label because that's where they had been before other information was also provided).

Left, right, doesn't matter to me, but placing in order of most convenient likely need to know the data to eliminate having to scroll over so much, does seem nice.
