Beyond the battle scenes, Braveheart is awful - virtually nothing right about it.

Yeah, especially the Battle of Stirling Bridge - there's not even a bridge in it! Come on make an effort Mel...

And the Patriot - Big Mel frees all the slaves from the Evil English. Wrong war sonny-jim, the Slaves fought for the British against their slave masters.

I JUST finished watching Joyeux Noël, about Scottish, German, and French soldiers celebrating together Christmas together during WWI. It's quite the hard-on for the EU, but its very good and very touching.

Two of my top 15 favorite movies ever.

Downfall is great for all of the reasons it's disliked by people who don't like it.

My favourite is the great escape but two others that i rate really highly, both black and white 40s films are; The Best Years of Our Lives - an excellent character study of the changing fortunes of the WW2 veterans upon returning to cilvillian life and The Fighting Sullivans - a true story of 5 brothers who joined the US navy in WW2. I highly recommend these last two if you've never seen them.

2. The Patriot

oh right. the thread.

Saving Private Ryan

the great escape

(and although it's not a film) band of brothers

i also liked the thought behind a bridge too far but the film isn't good enough to celibrate the bravery of the British paratroopers who were dropped into Arnem and stood their ground despite no support and almost no ammo. they died to defend what they thought was right. my great uncle was in market garden. sorry about blabbing on for so long but talking about world war two sturs things inside me... anywho. back to the list.

enemy at the gates

the desert fox (Rommel was a great soldier and leader. he did as he was told until the end)

Blackhawk Down

Your great uncle was in Operation Market Garden? Thats cool. I would have loved someone from my family to be in the war, it would be so great to talk to them.

Ill add Blackhawk Down to my list. I saw a documentary on that, with input by the actual people who faught in it. Great documentary, as good as the film imo.

he died in Arnem.

Dulcet et decorum est pre patria mori

it is a glorius and noble thing to die for one's country

that is why he fought even though he was a coal minner and was urged to stay. and he died for a saying that is about as true as my avatar.

"Dulcet et decorum est pre patria mori"

We were taught that phrase, and learnt some of the poem at high school. I always liked that phrase, even thought its latin.

Not a film, but a mini-series:

Band of Brothers - the series doesn't glorify war IMO and with 10 episodes you get a good insight into the men that make up Easy Company and you grow attached to each of them.

Can't wait for the Pacific War, which for those that don't know is another mini-series being made by the same people from Band of Brothers.
