Custom XML:s for maps [SUGGESTION]

Postby natty dread on Mon Nov 09, 2009 4:24 am

Concise description:
  • Custom XML:s for some old maps (or why not new ones), so that you could play the same map with 2-3 different sets of rules.

Specifics:
  • For example, you could have classic map, but add an objective, hold asia + europe to win. Or you could have World 2.1 World Conquest, where everyone starts at starting positions and the rest of the map is neutrals. The options are unlimited.

The maps with custom XML:s would be marked with a symbol or something in the map list, and when you select the map, you'd get another choice - standard XML or one of the custom ones.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • I think this could bring great fun to tournaments, and give a boost to some old maps which everyone has played ad nauseum, by introducing fresh gameplay.
  • Fun!

That would mean creating different images for each XML option, with instructions appropriate for each option. Sounds like a lot of work, for not so much gain. I'd probably rather see new maps being created with new XML features ;)

The instructions could be in a separate text message which shows up in the log or somewhere when you start the game...

Would be easy to do - but the alternate gameplay options would need to go through the foundry process.

You would also need alternate images since it is required that all rules exist on the actual map image and within the map size guidelines.

3 rule sets = 6 map images ( Large and Small)

But this requirement could be changed for custom XML:s. Maybe an option in the game finder that you need to check to see the custom XML games, and also not making them visible in the "join a game" link. This would ensure inexperienced players wouldn't join the custom games unknowingly. Then you could just show a text message with the map that shows all the rule changes that come from the custom XML.
