iancanton wrote:lithuania is the biggest country by area, has the largest population and is economically the most important. however, it has the fewest regions on the map!

the orange bonus zone, in particular, is rather annoying because it's shape is like a railway line and someone who holds yellow must pass through it. is it possible to add 5 to 10 more regions to lithuania (which ought to have at least one-third of the regions on the map because of its relative importance), then group them into bonus regions in a more sensible way for gameplay?

iancanton wrote:latvia is split into far too many regions. it's not good for the most difficult bonus to be the middle one of three, since it forces players to rush to the edges of the map. try cutting latvia to perhaps 2 bonus zones of 5 or 6 regions each (or 3 zones of 4 regions each).

Scania N113 wrote:I have tried hard to reduce the bonus a player gets for holding Latvia, and the method is to add impassables.

the impassables are a definite improvement on the original; i can see them being adjusted bit by bit as progress is made on the map. i'd certainly like some of the latvia regions to be merged with each other: if the most difficult bonuses are in the middle of the map, then players at the top and bottom will have a big advantage in multiplayer games.

if u split some regions of lithuania and merge some of latvia, then the overall size of the map can remain the same.

in the first post, can u state the total number of regions and update this number if it changes?

Hi, an update, that was done before I read that post, ian.

I changed water, legend, font size, texture of other countries, a bunch other stuff too.

Nice. I like that the trees don't penetrate with shadows as much.

Map of The Baltic States [OFFICIAL VERSION]

Postby Scania N113 on Fri Sep 11, 2009 4:21 am

Once again thanks a lot to captainwalrus! Here is the newest version of this map.

small map (625 X 565) (V1.0.08S)

large map (822 X 743) (V1.0.08L)
image

Changes made:
(1) disconnectting Saare and Talsi
(2) making the font larger
(3) changing the texture of the background of the map

On the other hand, regarding what iancanton said, I think adding more regions to Lithuania is actually a very good idea, but I have to find evidence in reality to support this. Or maybe I can try to divide Lithuania into two parts vertically (east and west) instead of horizontally (north and south).

As usual, please give more comments and ideas to this map. Thanks!

Nice update

-I think I liked the little highlight round the coast of the sea-bring that back maybe
-Remarks box and minimap need regraphicing
-capitals need a more recognisable symbol
-slightly less opacity on the sea texture maybe but I'll leave that to your own judgement.
-maybe try softening the edges round the tripleflag a little so it doesn't look like it was stuck on.

Please give as many comments as possible, so I can fix the basic shape of the map first. And then we can talk about graphics and gameplay.

the next graphic update will be made by a.sub, so maybe he has some great font he wants to use. Hopefully by having multipal people take turns with the graphics we will get a few different points of view and some interesting ideas thrown in there.

A step in the right directions! =D>

About this :

maybe this link could help http://www.reisenett.no/map_collection/europe/Lithuania_adm98.jpg ;)

Some suggestions/critics:

  • The font is a bit hard to read.
  • There's a lot of unused space between text and bonus values
  • The triple flag :(
  • Why neutral land disappear after remarks, where are kalingrad, poland? why they are on the minimap, but not in the main map?
  • It's possible to move remarks a bit to the left, not to cover partially taurage?

Being Lithuanian, I might be a bit biased, but there are seriously more regions than are being put into the map.

Especially since Latvia is almost half the size of Lithuania.

here is an idea for a gameplay objective that's unique: recreate the baltic way by holding regions that link the three capitals, to represent the people of three nations joining hands.

http://www.balticway.net/

as mentioned previously, lithuania needs more regions. the map below names 17 towns and cities in lithuania and also shows railways and major roads, so that u can see where the main links to latvia are, enabling u to put impassable forests in the most appropriate places (that means not south of daugavpils!).

Also being Lithuanian , I might be a bit biased as well, however I agree with Noir. Lithuania is the largest and most populous of these three nations, I have to believe this should be reflected in the number of regions and bonuses being allocated here.

Scania, i take it this is the latest version.
Could you pleace into your thread title please, the latest version number and the page it's on, thanks.
This is kind of standard text to let commentors know where the latests version can be found.

My comments:
1. Coming along nicely, although i find the text very hard to read on the small map in that fancy white font you've used, although no probs with the large map reading it. Also, the black text on both maps is hard to discern on the dark blue ocean.
2. i like the bevel on the terts :)
3. There seems to be something missing design-wise between the rectangular tri-flag top left, the round cornered mini-map, the coloured rectangle bonus indicators, and the grey rounded corner Remarks box. To add to this the mini-map is inset bevel.
Perhaps you should try for some consistency with all these peices to tie them together.
4. if you leave Belarus where it is, i.e. that corner perhaps move it closer to under that image but not close enough that someone would make a connection there. Just needs to be centered more that's all.
5. Trees to me look original and are excellent
6. and the overall colour scheme is working well.
Great work so far. :)

vilnius, kaunas and klaipeda have been misspelled as vilinius, kanus and kaloeda respectively.

ian's eyes are so sharp! Actually we are talking about the spelling too. To my knowledge, there more spelling mistakes, but do not worry we will modify it as soon as possible. On the other hand, I have found a very detailed map of Lithuania. I hope that we can put it in, or maybe we can group some of the territories.

Ooh, right, I am supposed to be working on this, I forgot.
I will just sort of group territories from the new map you posted and make new territories and if anyone has a problem with the groupings than someone with more knowledge of it can tell me how to fix it, K?

Why isn't Estonia's capital region named by the capital, as all the other countries?

Latvia has Riga, Lithuania has Vilinius, so shouldn't Estonia have Tallinn?

Sorry Scania N113,

it's more than a month without an update.
I move this map in the Bin (i think) for a short break.

The topics in the Recycling Bin are map projects that have either been put on temporary "Vacation" by the mapmaker, or have been "Abandoned" entirely. They have been placed here for one of the following reasons:
  • The mapmaker requested that the map be given Vacation or Abandoned staus.
  • The topic was still in the Draft stage and went more than a month without an update from the mapmaker.
  • The topic had advanced beyond the Draft stage, but went more than two months without an update from the mapmaker.

But don't worry, when you'll post an update, one of the foundry mods will put your map back in the drafting room. ;)

Don't worry, this will be back, but with more people working on it. We never really got this off the ground as a Mapmaker's Guild project. It will get there though.
Check out the other thread.
