Able to delete and / or edit in game chat [Rejected]

howdy
another small game chat possibililty
[a way of deleting old posts of yours]

i.e. if you accidentally post a real important message that was supposed to be team only, and you forgot to click the little box, you could delete the message. or if you called your opponent a bad thing and regretted it you could delete it.

I think the ability to edit game chat would possibly be abused. For example, you get stuck in alliance you want out of, well all you'd have to do is go back and edit the game chat and deny it. Sure, not an honorable thing to do, but I wouldn't put it past people, as it's already done in the forums.

I do like the suggestion of proofing team chat against posting errors, as has already been suggested.

Besides... who says "leaked" team messages are an accident? If someone puts team strategy in the chat and then says "oops", it could be they are trying to spread propaganda than that they forgot to check the box...

Able to delete and / or edit in game chat [Rejected]

<Body>:

* Suggestion Idea:

ability to delete and / or edit in game chat

* Specifics:
ranging from typos to post first think later we all right stuff in game chat we immediately regret and /or want to change from time to time - it would be great if we could do this

* Why it is needed:

as above really , i suspect every player at some stage posted something they wanted to change and / or delete at some stage - this change if it was possible would be widely welcomed and i suspect lead to an overall happier community as often one spur of the moment post in game chat can snowball into something ridiculous

Don't now why people on here don't like being cooks, remember under siege: A former SEAL, now cook, is the only person who can stop a gang of terrorists when they sieze control of a US Navy battleship.

Disagree...

A permanent record of the chat is a good thing...

However - editing the last post (if it's yours) is a good idea.

im all for a happy medium like this one or something like a 24 hour window max in which you can change your post - but even yeti's counter proposal above would be a vast improvement

Not in favor of this at all! Chat can be useful in many many ways. :)

Why was this rejected? The only reason cited ("above") was that a permanent record of chat was good. yeti's suggestion makes that point moot. It would be very useful to fix typos, remove notes that were meant for self or teammates but ended up public, and anything you write that you regret a few minutes later. When editing your posts in the forum, a note is attached to it (date, time and editor) if anyone has posted after you, but not if you're the most recent poster. This would work the same way, except it'd disallow changes instead of attaching a note. And obviously nothing could be changed after the game was archived.

Maybe giving someone 5 mins to delete a post. That would solve errors.

If it could be done in a way that allowed editing before anyone else had read it then I see no problem but I don't see the "recent poster" thing as a good cut off.

I agree. Allowing edits or deletions only when NO ONE ELSE (neither actual combatant nor interested onlooker) is viewing the game would be all right by me, but it hardly seems worth the trouble. I am sure that there are other suggestions and bugs more worthy of action. If we really wanted to achieve something in this vein, perhaps it would be better to change the Game Chat buttons to use two different buttons, "Broadcast" and "Private" (for self or team only), rather than a check box that needs to be rechecked each time. For that matter, why not make the check box keep its value through posts, or default it to the private setting?

The ability to edit shortly after posting would be convenient. What if you had 2 minutes to edit? It would be useful for fixing errors in your post. Or if you post something in one game that you meant to post in another (I did this once when I first joined).

I agree that the long term editing is a bad idea, as it would get abused.
