"map ads" to speed up production?

Postby sinctheassasin on Fri Apr 24, 2009 12:00 am

hey, im sinc.

I think map production could be much more efficient if we had some sort of side bar, or space along the bottome of the site page that displayed different threads that need comments and suggestions.

many maps which would have been great maps failed because nobody bothered to look at the threads frequently enough.

so, if we cant bring the people to the forums, lets bring the forums to the people right?

just an idea, tell me what you think :)

We've considered using the [Headlines] on the Home Page to advertise Maps in need feedback and comments. We'd of course use the [Maps] tag, but only up to 3 of any particular tag will show up on the side panel there. Of course we'd have to figure out how a map qualifies/a standard routine sequence, for it be headlined.

It's a thought...to think about it. Any input? Would this get more people to comment?

Headlines related to Maps might bring more comments, but considering some of the recent commentary about redesigning the website, I wonder how much attention users pay to that strip down the right hand side of the Home page, or the entire Home page for that matter. Are most users like me, logging in and going as quickly as possible to My Games, then only going to other parts of the site after I have played my turns? Are there any statistics regarding how often the Headline links are used, as opposed to, say, the Forum button at the top of the page? Of course, I guess it can't hurt to put [Maps] tags in the [Headlines]. Choosing which maps to feature is a quandary, especially with the limit of 3, since maps naturally split into groups by the number of stamps they have: 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4.

im sure people would love to comment on new maps, as these are the fruits of conquer club.

probably the reason so many dont is that they either forget or dont want to go looking through the forums.

possible, you could make it so that the three most recently posted maps in map suggestions and new ideas could take the top three spots

i not sure. as a person who's map is in the new ideas stage, I feel that my map could really take off if there was more publicity

I'd like to call attention to the Foundry Newsletter, which attempts to address the problem you're speaking of. I've got a quicklink in my signature here, we announce on Headline each new issue, offer PM subscription, and of course you can always find it stickied in the main Foundry.

I have Greasemonkey auto-login, so I rarely see the announcements. I think it would be great to add them to My Games after the site revamp. :)

While I can understand your thoughts I also see 30+ maps in the ideas stage, 20+ maps that is being drafted, 10+ maps that has made it to the main foundry and 10+ that has made it to the FF/Beta stage.
There is just no way that all maps in production can be easily shown off in one place and I'm not at all sure that those in the ideas stage are in most need of getting more views. And either way I think that the foundry newsletter is a much better tool for this, we just need to get people to read it.

Great idea! There seems to be room to spare if the columns on "My Games" were compressed, but that might depend on your screen resolution.

I'm not sure that's the best idea tbh. With topbar and sidebars on both sides it will start to feel really crowded even if you have quite a wide screen resolution.

I like Tack's post, maybe this problem could be fixed by higher promotion of the newletter?

Well, I don't think anyone spends a lot of time on the "My Games" page, so I don't think crowding would be a big issue. I imagine you could see just as many games on the page at one time as you can now. I am NOT suggesting that this appear on the Game Play pages. I wouldn't want to give up space for the map.
But what about this instead: put the Headlines in a horizontal bar below the top menu (Home, Instructions, Scoreboard, etc). Perhaps this could be a crawl, allowing even more information to pass before the user. Again, I don't think I would put this on the Game Play page.
