Xtra army for going second

Postby demonfork on Wed Mar 25, 2009 4:06 pm

Going first in a sequential match is a big advantage...

I have an account at MTGO (Magic the Gathering Online) At the start of the match each player gets to draw 6 cards, the player that goes second gets to draw a 7th card to offset the advantage of the player that goes first. Actually this rule is not only specific to MTGO, it is also played this way IRL. This rule was specifically made to take away the unfair advantage of going first.

Concise description:
  • The player that goes second in a sequential game gets an xtra army to offset the advantage of the player that goes first.

Specifics:
  • Obviously this xtra army would only apply to the first round turn of the player that goes second. This would only apply to sequential games.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • Make the start of a sequential match more balanced & remove the unfair advantage of going first.
  • More peeps would play sequential games if the fear of going second were removed.

Would this apply to all sequential games, or only 1v1 games?

Think it should apply to the 2nd turn of round 1 of any sequential game.

Then would successive players get additional armies? Maybe not an additional one for each player (2 for 3rd player, 3 for 4th, etc...), but perhaps every other player or so. After all, the 8th player to move is at a far worst disadvantage than the 2nd player to move.

I think this is an interesting idea that WOULD offset the going-first advantage.

If I remember Magic, the Gathering correctly, it's not that the second (and subsequent, in the case of Chaos games) player gets to draw an additional card, it's that the first player doesn't get to draw at all. This is how it was when I was a Judge at least 5 years ago, maybe the rules have changed since then.

My point is that maybe instead of giving the second player more armies, give the first player less.

Personally, I find the suggestion in this current thread (not the one quoted above) to be a stronger one because someone "dropping a bonus" doesn't happen every game, but the first-turn-advantage does happen every single game.

Yes you are right, that is how it is done.

I believe that this would also work better here, the player that goes first gets one less army to start, everyone else gets the normal amount of starting armies.
