Have options for diplomacy

Postby Simon Viavant on Thu Mar 19, 2009 7:47 pm

Concise description:
  • Under "Find a Game", have the options
No alliances, open alliances, and secret alliances

Specifics:
  • In "no alliances", there can be no truces or diplomacy of any kind
  • In "open alliances", the rules on diplomacy are the same as the are now
  • In "secret alliances", secret diplomacy is allowed

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • More interesting game play with secret diplomacy
  • Stops grumbling about alliances
  • Make everyone happy, regardless of their opinion about alliances
  • Give people who want it the option of playing without diplomacy
  • Prevents endless headache over interpretation and enforcement of the rules
  • People are less likely to get in trouble for doing something they're unaware was against the rules.

So, as long as you're playing with people who know that attacking the strongest is a good idea, you can play "no alliances", but if there might be someone who doesn't fully understand the balance-of-power, you should play "open alliances"?

I'm not a fan of alliances, but I have nothing against people offering to share a card territory. It's not an alliance, but it would be considered diplomacy. Would that be considered "open alliances"?

Yes. I should've said no diplomacy instead of no alliances.

Implementing an idea like this would probably just make things harder for the Hunters to track down who is violating the secret diplomacy rules. People would get confused about whether their game allowed diplomacy or not, so they would just complain if someone accused them of cheating. This would just open up more problems than it would help, which is one of the reasons we don't allow it in tournaments.

That's why I made an option for legalized secret diplomacy.

I don't see how this would make it harder to track it down in other games.

And where does it say that alliances aren't allowed in tournaments?

Rule #2 on the Rules page. When a few people have tried to organize a tournament that allowed secret diplomacy, we stopped them.

OK. It seems like you meant alliances in general weren't allowed in tournaments.
