Escalating Irritation

Postby DaeRave on Mon Jan 15, 2007 10:36 am

This has probably been discussed before. I'm new, so if so I apologize in advance, bare with me.

Does anyone else hate Escalating cards?
My first 3 games here, and the last three losses, were because of escalating cards.
In all three situations, someone on the brink of defeat cashes in their cards. Then they mass up and stomp one person, thus gaining their cards and cashing in for even MORE troops. And then its a snowball effect, it just gets bigger and bigger.

The first time it happened I was really impressed and congratulated the guy on a decisive victory.
The second time it happened ditto, but I was scratching my head.
The third time... waitaminute.

One of those victors patted herself on the back and attributed it to strategy, even though she was getting stomped the entire game. And at one point even whined about me stomping her, going on about how she was done and I just ruined her.
Then she cashes in some cards, and she wins in one turn.

I dont know, it just seems a bit cheesey. I mean unless they have some absolutely terrible diceluck, its pretty much a garunteed win once they cash in big.
So far, anyways. I think I'll stick to Flat Rate.

Flat rate games can be much longer... sometimes they evolve to building games, and I hate this. Anyway, with my cursed dice, flat rate is much worse... with tons of armies is more difficult to lose :)

Escalating cards I think does take some of the strategy away as it introduces a larger element of chance. I typically play flat rate but I usually keep a couple of escalating games going for fun.

And we've got some alternates options in the works, in regards to cards.:)

I've heard a lot of people say that escalating games take the skill out of it, but I don't think that's necessarily the case. It's just a different sort of skill than that required with build-type games.

Yes, there's luck involved (having a card set at the right time, being close enough to a weaker player to snap them up and take their cards, etc.), but like a lot of things with CC, it's not even so much luck as it is putting yourself in a position to take advantage when the moment arrives. And that takes skill.

Or at least positioning.

Besides, I enjoy flat and no card games, but I LOVE escalating. The thrill of getting a good cascade going and wiping out the other five players in one turn while cashing in six sets of cards... OMG.

that's it right there. the skill is to get in a position where you can whack other players without getting whacked yourself, and the skill to have the right timing to be able to capitalize at the moment where you can turn the game your way. i've done it, and i've seen others do it where i'm not in position to stop them. luck rules in no cards, which is like playing craps -- mostly dice luck

That's why I like this game. Everything is strategy from the obvious where and what you attack right up to the multifarious alliances and all the way down to when you take your turn. Hell, even a lack of strategy is strategic. Someone's cashing in tons of cards for tons of money? Well, hell. Be that guy. Or don't get crushed by their armies - play better yourself.

And unlike card games, the dice REALLY don't make a difference since they only exist as 1-6, not 1-52.

Agree that esc. card games take skill, but so do no card games, it's a slower game but can be just as brutal (if not more) than card games. Dice luck (or lack thereof) is evident in all forms of the game. Ever tried to take someone out (holding 5 cards) in an esc. game and the dice failed you, leaving that player with 1 army on one territory, terrible feeling I tell you.
As a rule, I prefer to play esc card games with adjacent forts, and no card games with unlimited forts. For me this balances things out. With flat rate I don't really mind the forts, just being flat rate means a totally different game altogether.

whats the prob ?

Postby speckknoedelsup on Tue Jan 16, 2007 12:42 pm

so if you don't like escalating , don't play it,
i also did not like it when i was new to the game but you only have to get used to it , you need to play different tactics in esc than in flat rate, esc has the advantage that also players with a bad startup can win the game and even players who do not own a region for the whole game can win,
in esc you need to think and plan more thinking of the rounds that will come and counting cards is more important.
