Warning: You can't change your username!

Postby Rocketry on Tue Feb 10, 2009 4:27 pm

Concise description:
  • Place a note on the home page that warns newcomes they cannot change their username once their account is created.

Specifics:
  • Perhaps would go next to the tickable box that says you'll only create one account.

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • This will prevent this: How do I change my Username.
  • Also, prevents people from creating a second account just to get a new username. Newcomers may not realise how important it is not to create second accounts and may not realise the rule is actually strictly enforced.

So many people make threads "I want my username changed..." It would be nice if it was listed somewhere while creating an account so they would know that they should make sure to choose wisely.

I think it would be helpful if you didn't hint to it as an option in the Profile section of the User Control Panel. At the bottom of the Edit Account Settings tab we find:

Current password:
You must confirm your current password if you wish to change it, alter your e-mail address or username.

This is where I got the idea from and why I started the original thread in Q&A.

Cheers,
Hav.

I have sent this particular item to the admin. I would like to see this general suggestion implemented though.

Edits to change the text that is displayed there:
Open: /language/en/ucp.php
Code: Select all
'CURRENT_PASSWORD_EXPLAIN'   => 'You must confirm your current password if you wish to change it, alter your e-mail address or username.',
