Setting:
The Palamidi Fortress is an actual fortress in Greece, above the town of Nafplio. It was originally built by the Venetians, then completed by the Turks. What's interesting about the actual fortress is that it's only been in a small handful of conflicts, and has lost every single one (no matter which nation owned it or how well fortified it was), because the spread-out nature of the fortress makes it very difficult to defend.
In addition to being spread-out, the fortress was designed so that the different bastions can attack each other. The idea was that if one bastion was taken, it could be attacked by the other bastions, but it has the terrible drawback that if one bastion is taken, the invaders have a much easier time taking the other bastions!
I couldn't help being fascinated by the unique construction and tactics of this fortress, and I'd love to see if I can make this into a playable map (since renting the actual fortress for a giant game of capture the flag is probably not within my budget).
Gameplay:
The current map is a satellite image of the actual fortress. Graphics will change SIGNIFICANTLY before gameplay begins.
Black lines signify the outer walls of the fortress. Purple highlighted areas are the different BASTIONS.
Gameplay ideas:
1) Bastions will be able to attack each other, at least the other bastions in their area.
2) Each bastion starts off neutral! Once conquered, bastions get an auto-deployed bonus each round.
3) The plaza areas within the walls will be divided into regions, possibly attached to the nearest bastion.
4) The area OUTSIDE the walls may be divided into territories, with only 3-4 entrances into the main fortress, and a hefty bonus for holding the entire outer area.
Thoughts and feedback? I like the idea of an area outside the walls, making it more of a siege map, but it could also easily function as a map just within the walls, based around trying to hold the bastions.
Help!
If anyone's ever been to Nafplio, or knows anything about the history of the fortress, I've been unable to find the actual names and layouts of the bastions. I'm not sure if all the areas highlighted on my map are even bastions at all! Even though I've found two sources that gave me the names of the bastions, they disagree in location and even number of bastions. Does anyone know more about the actual history and layout of the fortress?
