Watch some games with veterans in them...Or, better yet, play some games with veterans in them...Even if you lose, you might learn a thing or two

alot of people will help people that really want to learn to play. I often play with newbs that I KNOW will play to help them out. Let me know if you want to set up a game sometime and I'll be happy to play a few games and give you some tips. It's best to talk to alot of people because everyone has different strategies and they work for different people. good luck in your games!

Is there some way of working out whether the games will go fast or not (like a 1/na, or something) ?

If you are looking for a quick game that you can play in a few hours, you can always play a realtime game. just post in the "call out" forum. Since no one knows you yet, It may be best to try to join a realtime game that someone else is setting up (especially if they are premium). Real time games are fun if you want to play an entire game in one sitting. If you get premium, waiting for turns aren't so bad........I tend to have over 20 games going at one time.

The more you play here, the more you will see who you like (and don't like) to play with. I generally play doubles with about 3 people all the time. As you play more and get more positive feedback, it will be easier for you to find a game that everyone participates in.

As a relative newbie, I can attest to this, once I got the first 5 games finished, and got that single stripe, higher ranked players stopped dropping out when I joined the game.

I haven't played many doubles games yet, the 2 I did try, my teammate deadbeated in both games. Until I get to know people, and find people who I can partner with, I think I am going to be stuck getting new recruites who deadbeat.

Now if only people would start leaving me feedback.

the people who have given me feedback where either partners in doubles games, we talked in the message bit or one guys just gave me random feedback. also if you really want feedback start giving people feedback i'm sure a lot of people will return the favour.

on the doubles game thing if you don't want a newbie as a partner only join the games where you'll be completing the team, at least then you know who your partner will be.
