Honestly, don't worry about the XML yet. You won't need to have it done until the very end of the mapmaking process. Focus first on getting a draft out (post in the drafts subforum) and give the basics of the graphical and gameplay style of the map. After a while, you'll be moved to the main foundry where the gameplay and graphics are almost perfected. Then you move to the Final Forge, where you do the XML and any final graphical/gameplay tweaks before the map is "quenched" and then put up for live play.
One thing you might want to do first is make sure the XML can accommodate whatever gameplay features you have planned - if it can't, there's a thread for requesting new XML features. If it can, then you're all set, but don't worry about writing it yet.
