Locking of Threads

Numberous threads have been locked with out any reason as far as I can see .The moment someone voices an opinion or a thread starts to get interesting .Thread Locked .
I know a site that doesn't lock as many threads as CC .Maybe the MODs can move there for a week or two for a vacation .Then we can get down to some sirius stuff .

Let me clarify that my reference to Owen has nothing to with why he was banned or if he was in the wrong or right. My point is they should issue warnings and then do a temporary ban instead of locking a thread- a sensible option.

I was following the Maxastuy thread b/c it was a good read and was extremely disappointed that it was locked. The ongoing discussion was headed in the direction of getting ambiguous rules clarified. Immediately after the the locking, I headed to Sug & Bugs to request that mods be able to "Thread Ban" users (ie; specific user cannot access specific thread(s)). Unfortunately due to current software limitations, its not possible.

I would support mini-bans for flamers, they shouldn't be flaming in the first place and the offense is worse if it used as a tactic to lock up useful or accusatory threads.

i agree with bruce. a great example of a thread that actually was a serious debate about a very gray area in the rules on CC was about offensive avatars, and how they are deemed offensive, etc:

as soon as the mods had to admit that they had made a very obvious error in judgement, thanks to andy looking at it all, and it was cleared up that concerns were taken to the wrong place, and it was explained how the process works, it was locked! why? a few stragglers, late to the debate, started going off topic around page 18, and it was locked a few posts later. heaven forbid anyone see that members dared to stand up to a poor decision by questioning the decision, and prevailing. reminds me of the days of when wicked ran loose in the forums, and would move and/or lock threads in the middle of the night, while the GD was sleeping. if you questioned a ruling she made or you proved her wrong, the thread was dead. a nice example, the babysitting thread:

in that thread, a mod declares some unwritten rule as the basis for an incorrect ruling, that everyone railed against, and it took twill stepping in to clarify things, and we are still awaiting a new rule to cover the issue. anyway, it just seems that when something of merit hits the GD, and people take on rules/rulings with rational and calm argument, and they happen to prevail, the threads are dead in the water. i don't care about the multitude of threads locked for flaming, especially paradicecity9's open flame thread concerning me in the GD which i have learned is not a 3 day ban as i had been told it was in the past.... i care about the threads that help to make CC a better place, by questioning why things are how they are.

and as far as scottland's suggestion to just start banning people left and right to keep control of the GD, using myself as an example, is SOMEWHAT ridiculous. often times, mods are off base or behind on what is going on. for instance, there are many inside jokes flying around the GD that often receive official or friendly warnings, because a new mod is unaware of the GD's history. a fortunate few of the new mods actually ask members that spend time in the GD to help them determine if something is truly an offense or if it is a joke they are unaware of. however, if you ban people that are truly breaking rules and causing general mayhem, i see no problem with that. i think scottland chose a poor example when he named me as an offender of note. i for one knew the exact moment i was going to receive my latest ban, and this is my first post in about 2 weeks due to the situation. what did the mods accomplish? they lost a member that reports multi's, flames, off topic posts, etc, and gained a slew of "PAT MYSELF ON THE BACK" and "LIST" posts... the GD is becoming overly sanitized, and a much less fun place for it.

Owen I agree with much of your post. Scott just used you as an example, since you were a recent 24 hour ban. He did not say weather it was right or wrong, but locking of threads to quickly has to stop. Good debates can be ruined by 1 or 2 people flaming. I do not see why those people should be allowed to get a whole thread locked. Just makes no sense to me. Maybe I mod can explain?

If you feel that any mod is locking threads unnecessarily, send them a friendly PM about it. It's true that sometimes the mods don't have the time to decipher everything that is said in a thread, so if it appears to be some flames or off-topicness, it might get locked. Even if it probably didn't deserve it. Just calmly explain your points via PM and the mod may reverse their decisions.

Locking threads is always preferred over temporary vacations. Every forum has mods who are assigned to those forums in order to look out for people and threads that are breaking the forum guidelines. These mods have the abilities to lock threads and send out friendly PMs to individuals, but they are not able to hand out vacations. Vacations are supposed to be used sparingly. Locking is supposed to show publicly something(s) that is not allowed on the forum.

I sent a PM to the mod that locked my thread asking why. I received no response. I was not hostile at all. And yes the mod read my PM or at least deleted it. Vacations send a stronger message to people than locking a thread. 24 hours is not long, but long enough for people to cool off and try again.

Actually, just clicking on the Inbox moves the PM from your Outbox into your Sendbox, even if it hasn't actually been opened yet. So perhaps he hasn't actually read it or hasn't had time to reply.

I have no idea why you were banned- quite honestly I don't care. There must have been a problem is all that I know, surely they just don't ban people left and right for no reason. Once I received your pm, I quickly posted that it had nothing to do with you.I merely used 'your ban' as an example- it wasn't a subtle dig to you personally. No where did I say anything about GD, I was referencing the Cheating and Abuse thread they locked. If flaming was indeed the reason, they should have given those people warnings- and if continued then perhaps use extreme measures for an example, give them 24 hour forum bans. A Cheat thread should never be locked- period. EDIT: Unless it's settled and goes to where ever it goes...

That post had nothing to do with any supposed "personal differences". It was merely meant to point out the exact thing that seems to be causing the thread-locking that this thread is discussing. If you would like to continue the discussion about flamers, and trolls getting threads locked, please continue to post here.
