Average ratings left by each player

Postby PLAYER57832 on Sun Jul 27, 2008 4:16 pm

Concise description:
Instead of changing the rating completely for each game, what about averaging the ratings each player leaves?

Specifics:
Each time a person leaves a rating for a player, the scores would be averaged with the ratings that person left previously for that player. That averaged score would be combined with the other people's scores, just like now. The only difference is that it would be an average that is combined, not just the latest rating.

When the game is archived, the person would see both the most recent score (or up to a week's worth, say) AND the overall score that person has left. The OVERALL score would still be at the top, just like it is now.
Tags would be kept, and listed just as they are now, but with with a number notation next to them to indicate the number of times that tag was left. (and you might add a total for the tags up top ... again, listing each tag and the number of times that person got it in a string list ... that is "friendly -2, fast-3, slow-1, good teammate-5 etc.)

This will improve the following aspects of the site:
Two problems right now. First, there is no real handy way to go back and check the games you have played with someone before you rate them (once they are archived, you can look at all the games, but not before; now you have to do a search, then go search again after you click on each game, etc.). Second, even if we could see all the games, it is hard to really take all the games into account.

It was noted under the old system that someone could change, start out with a bunch of negatives because they were in a bad mood or just did not understand CC or just plain needed to grow up. Under the old system that was a problem, because once a neg was left, there was no real way to override it. Even leaving a positive later did not do it. (most people did not even read all those positives and the neg still stuck). And, more often than not, the person who left the neg might not even be around any longer... yet there it would be.
Over time, the positives could (assuming a change in behavior) balance, but the negs would still be there ... even years later.

Now, since the ratings are averaged anyway, that is far less a concern. Still, it is nice to be able to say, essentially, "gee, I gave this person 20 all fives, but today I was cursed at and then the player up and deadbeat ..." Conversely, maybe you had a bad experience with someone before, maybe even put them on your ignore for a time, but just had a wonderful game with very nice chat, etc. Is it really appropriate to give all 5's ... but giving less might not send the right message either.

If my ratings were averaged each time, then I would not have to worry. I could simply rate that one game ... and let the average speak for the rest.
