Why The World Is Ending As We Know It

Postby DaGip on Sun Jul 13, 2008 12:47 pm

Whether or not you are a prophecy guru, Christian End-Worlder, or just an atheistic empirical geek...you might be getting a feeling that something isn't quite right in the world.

This is a video an atheistic friend of mine on YouTube has provided. He truly believes we do not have much time, completely due to the Peak oil crisis, it has nothing to do with some story or prophecy written in some age old manuscript dug up in the desert.

The higher the price of oil goes, eventually the people won't be able to afford any gas at all, and the economy will come to a screeching halt. The way you perceive society and the world right now, will have to completely change. Our whole world that we know of is built around fossil fuels. Without them, we would have to basically go back to retro-human civilization and live more like the Native Americans did.

Why did he have to mess it up at the end by revealing that he was a environmental wacko? Global warming is a farce. "We must stop burning fossil fuel immediately". Ya ok.

No we must find ways of using less fossil fuels is what the environmentalists are saying, only people who are wackoo are those who cant see the sense of that.

Heck, we need to burn less fossil fuels, not stop. It's like smoking. To get a smoker to stop smoking, does cold turkey to nicotine work? Or is using a patch or tablets more effective?

As for the original thing: did you know that they used to make pure electric cars? They halted production. One of mankind's stupidest acts.

Yes the world will end as we know it. So what else is new?

I remember when I was in college, I walked into the remote room where the key punch machine was and the card reader was located among the Freshman dorm complex and I saw it. Angels sang and announced its presence (OK that might have been an exaggeration there). The most sacred device the IBM PC was there in all its glory, running Basic with the F5 key that would automatically run your program with a single push of a button.

The world as I knew it ended on that day.

Do you know that in China, more people text message on cell phones than talk over them? I remember "watching" a hockey game on my pager, and that was in the late 90's. (Basically getting score updates every few minutes.)

We have the technology to do away with oil completely. (Shock and horror, but it's true.) We can build hot water solar electric generating plants that store the hot water during the day for 24/7 electrical power generation. We can go 100% solar if we use Federal land for the system. We can replace gas cars with all electric cars that go off this solar grid. We can do this now, with existing technology. Even if we don't do this, if we only did this 50% we would be walking into a new era as brave and fantastic as that era that came about when we abandoned the horse for the model T.

But the fact is that we didn't have the Model T until the city streets were deep in horse manure. When it becomes profitable it will happen. And the world will change. The old world will end; the new world will begin. "See I make all things new."

Where to even begin? (or maybe just why bother???)

Global warming is now a confirmed FACT. The effects it will have, how far reaching the warming will be and even the exact causes are debated, but the Earth is warming to an extent considered significant by climatologists, Geologists, etc.

When even Big Business starts making plans ...

Oil is limited in supply. We actually know roughly the quantity of oil in existance. There are some areas as yet untapped. These are hard to reach places where the "oil" is very difficult to obtain, low grade, etc. This was said in the 70's, and changed when the Arctic Oil reserves, and a few other deposits were found. BUT our technology/knowledge is now so much more advanced that it is extremely, extremely unlikely significant amounts of oil are still undiscovered.

The Richest Arab nations, those with all the oil are investing in alternative energy systems ... that ought to tell you something in and of itself.

peak oil is on its way definitely - it might even be upon us already. But it's not going to spell the end of civilization - the world is going to change but it's not going to be the end of us. Market forces are are already driving the improvement (in efficiency and cost) of renewables. Carbon emissions need to be taxed to jimmy this process along but it's going to happen. Google a graph of solar panel efficiency and unit cost over time, it's pretty interesting - not to say reassuring. I mean of course we need to do our bit too, but that's to stop so much CO2 entering the atmosphere, which is kind of linked - but it's peak oil that is going to drive renewable energy, not climate change.

HC, I actually agree with you. I think the Market will drive our behavior and we will not come to an demise delving in anarchy. There may be some protests here and there, and they might get a few skulls cracked, but I don't think anything really Apocalyptic will happen as foreseen by so many Christian doomsayers.

We are living in a time of cycles coming to an end and then starting up again into a new cycle of civilization. It is scary for some, as it will be a bit alien to how their generations have grown up and believed.

Deniers? Is that a different spin on Conspiracy Theorist? Why doesn't John Stossel do an investigation into 9-11? I am sure he would find much more convincing evidence than what he brought up in this little stint.

I hear ya. After all this time!

heavycola wrote:peak oil is on its way definitely - it might even be upon us already.

It's coming, but not for a long time. The oil prices you see today are politically driven-----not for lack of resource. OPEC has said this a million times. If our governments wanted cheap fuel(in any form, ay Greenland?), then we would have it.

Anyway, OPEC has put out figures saying that oil will be back down to $75.00(U.S.) a barrel by 2010. Because of new drilling sites. But this is only if this new oil is allowed to be refined quick enough, and I'm talkin' to you EXXON.

PLAYER57832 wrote:The Richest Arab nations, those with all the oil are investing in alternative energy systems ... that ought to tell you something in and of itself.

Seems more and more they are developing super-duper new educational systems, not so much new energy sources.Western countries still have the monopoly there, as they have the technology. It's not like Iran is going to be allowed to go nuclear. But yeah, they are converting. Solar Power seems to be a big deal in the Midle East, but that's logical seeing as they get all that sun. You would think that Wind Power would be an easy sell too. =)

PLAYER57832 wrote:We actually know roughly the quantity of oil in existance.

VERY roughly. Sure we know what we have, but what's still out there is still a rough guess.

I hate to tell you the bad news. You don't want "global warming."

Long story short, significant amounts of fresh water comming from the north pole will conpletely shut down the "gulf stream" that takes warm water up the Atlantic and then back down to the UK. That water keeps Great Britian from being the place it would normally be, like Russia or most of Northren Canada. Any minor temperature increase would be dwarfed by the sudden return to your nation's proper latitude.

Sorry, I lost sarcasm the day in December when I went (North and East) to London and the exceptionally warmer climate from where I was on Long Island.

Just so you know, one of the widely accepted theories are that with the melting of the fresh ice in Greenland, the current that brings warmth to the UK would be gone. Thus, the second Little Ice Age. (First was sometime between the 10th the 16th centuries)

We all talk about oil as something that is running out, but what a lot of people totally forget is the energy (normally coal) for making other stuff that is really important.
to make:
Steel (+ all other metals)
Cement (+ kiln firing bricks etc.)
Glass

All require tons of fossil fuels to get to the right temperature. These will also run out, but still we rip down old buildings. A Victorian house in London will be livable for 400+ years. I doubt the same could be said of new built houses.

Everything that can be, has to change. Quarry rocks instead of pre casting concrete lintels, kerbstones and the like. make new industry out of old ones. Slate roof tiles instead of pre cast concrete.

We need to make glass and Steel so we carry on - but where natural products can be used - we should use them.
