Today is Malawi's independance holiday!

Postby Ditocoaf on Sat Jul 05, 2008 8:12 pm

While I admit I had never heard of this country until today, an informative thread that is now unfortunately locked brought it to my attention. I feel that this is a great learning opportunity.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malawi

This country is another example of the old ways of imperialism, with brute force and visible contol. (I would argue that small, poor countries are still under imperialism, but now through corporations and the World Bank.)

Does anybody have any more information or insights on the fascinating subject of Malawian independence?

One thing is knowing that living conditions are shit there, quite another to read how many people die each year, how many orphans there are, how many people have AIDS etc.

Statistics are a wonder

The situation is far from good, but it could be a lot worse.

:( we treated them, and the rest of africa (except white-ruled rhodesia (OOPS!)) like shit.
The west sure does use a lot of double standards. What massive hypocrites we can be.
