There are supposedly 12 dimensions that all are pushed up against each other like sheets of paper. You exist in each of these dimensions, and in each you are closer to yourself than you are to your own skin. But because you are a seperate and different you in each dimension, you have different will in each. You are you, but maybe in the third dimension you are a crack-head, in the 7th you are a world-ranked barricuda spear fisherman, and in the 11th you are a trillionair. In this respect, they are all parellel, but connected.
I saw this a program on the discovery of the twelve dimensions on the Discovory Channel. Pretty kick-ass, scientist using mostly math to prove the existance of twelve other dimensions. There may be more, but twelve certainly. i don't understand the math at all, but gravity leaks from the twelth dimension into ours.

I'm not familiar with the discovery program you saw, but I do know there are several multi-dimensional theories out there, including the one that supports string theory. Parallel universes was also an interesting postulated theory, and I don't know if it "intersects" with the multiple universe theory which is currently being proposed to explain the non uniform and somewhat random expansion of the universe over time.
Unfortunately it has been 25 years since I was in college, so I generally hear about these things indirectly and often at college reunions. (Or glancing at journals.)
Perhaps a UFO isn't from a different dimension but from a different time; a time traveling device. That's why it looks the same, because it is really the same ship traveling to different points of space and time. (Of course it could also be the copy cat phenomenon.) I prefer my UFOs to remain "unidentified."

I have always thought there were a basic 11 dimensions, not actually 12. There actually are supposed to be an infinite number of dimensions, but they are just folded over and into each other, so, for mathematical purposes, all dimensions can be explained using the 11 dimension model.
The first 3 are what you are familiar with, the 4th is time, and the other 7 dimensions are folded into subatomic particles. From these 11 dimensions, apparently everything in the Universe can be stemmed from.
Now I know that quantum physicists used to use a 10 dimensional model, but they couldn't get the model to fold, so they added an 11th dimension and their mathematical models began to fold in and grow. It was a step into Chaos Theory...
The principle is actually fairly simple to understand as you can see from a sequence of numbers:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14,...
As you can see, the number 11 begins a new sequence. The number line can be divided in sequences of 10 but the sequences of 11 overlap each other on the number line at 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99...and then after that you start to get numbers that look like this: 110, 121, 132,143...and so on. It begins to look more and more chaotic, but in actuality, they are just an continuation of the sequence of 11.
Scientists can always add other dimensions into their models, but basically, all you need is 11 dimensions to explain the Universe.
My understanding is that the entire Universe is a reflection of itself, but in different infinite stages of existence. So that the Sun in our solar system is only a reflection of Betelgeuse in the constellation of Orion, or every other star for that matter. And then each galaxy is a reflection of each another galaxy. The Earth, in turn, is a reflection of each and every other planet/moon, they are just sitting in different dimensional time lines apart from us, and of their own volition and future.
The same goes for living creatures, each evolutionary time line continues on reflecting each other, but yet they grow separately. We all exist within a Multi-verse of probabilities. And since probabilities in the Universe MUST occur, then it stands to reason that the insect-like creatures eventually evolved into something that seems like an alien to us, or the dinosaurs perhaps had an offshoot that was humanoid and took off for space somewhere in the Universe. You might end up discovering that there are as many alien species flying around in space as there are sands upon the shores of all the Oceans in the world! But yet, they may exist in other Universes, that are separate from us.
If the Multi-verse theories are correct, then our population problems could easily be solved; because that means that there are infinite numbers of similar Earth-like planets and solar systems that exist in another Universe. If we could slip through that 11 dimensional skin, we could visit another earth, perhaps one that doesn't have any humans on it! We could easily solve the overpopulation problem without having to kill billions of people on the planet, just slip people off into another dimensional facsimile of our own planet and solar system.
Oh, if you would all only vote for DaGip for world emperor...
