you're right about them throwing it in the ocean- that idea was discarded though, since he ring was able to be found in the bottom of a river by a bumbling hobbit, what kept it from being found in the ocean?
there was another way to destroy the ring. however, now i'm not sure if it's ever mentioned in the movies or not. because of my possible mistake, i'll give you a hint: this second method to destroy the ring was no longer a viable option at the time of the War of the Ring because of a major event that occurs in The Hobbit
