Yes! Because this is so, I had a natural aversion to football for most of my life, despite growing up in honest-to-goodness football country. The first time I ever actually sat down and watched an entire football game was when my partner's family took me to an Oregon v. Cal game. It was very very cold and rainy. I had on a very charming green and yellow skirt suit with yellow stockings and green shoes that I had to cover up with a blanket because of the inclemency!, so I was from the start ill-disposed to the occasion. For about the first half of the game, my partner simply tried to explain to me what a "down" was. But when it finally clicked, everything changed. Every play became a gamble, a bet, a dare! I was smitten by the quarterback, a wee boy with skinny minnie legs, struggling in one of his first major games. Finally, the game went into overtime, and tell the glory Oregon, the Ducks won!

I'm still no football fan, but I understand the game and can enjoy it, at least when played at the college level.

The wee boy, of course, is my darling Dennis Dixon.

I would say that the fact that your darling suffered a catastrophic knee injury during normal play should be another strike against 'Murican footbaw.

Did they teach you to read over there? I said that an average US basketball fun cares more about NCAA tournament than NBA tournament!! In NCAA there are actually away funs, like in european football. There are leagues, promotions and a proper comptetion. There are office polls... NBA, NHL, NFL and whatever you call this american cricket league are big circuses fun to watch but seriously lacking sporting edge as there is no free trade on players or institute of promotion/relegation. Do you know that English football has 4 fully professional leagues, 3 semi-professional and a number of leagues below it where players are still getting paid?

And off course, americans dont care about international team competitions in general as they cannot stand losing...

For you: Were talking about AMERICAN FOOTBALL

....and for you, can you not read. i said "stop calling it soccer, i's name is Football. comprende.

in world Football you don't need a playbook, sure the manager/coach has certain plays at set pieces, but when a winger or midfield play maker is running with the ball they can be unpredictable. there is no set play, it's like freestyle and no one really has ny say over that said player. a QB may think on his feet if his wide receiver or running back is man-marked and decide to go it himself, but this happens not that much.

you can't teach skills like Christiano Ronaldo,Ronaldinho,Maradona,Ruud Gullit,Zinadine Zindane,George Best and the likes they were born with it, just pure natural talent. George Best was a complete pisshead ad so were a lot of great players like him during the 60's,70's and 80's, but come Saturday afternoon they would get on the pitch and play fantastically. i doubt AF players could of done that and we're not talking just a few beers, we're talking bottles of Champagne and Vodka or anything else that was going.

nowadays, it's a totally different mindset for proffessional footballers, as the game is getting quicker and you have to be in prime condition. as said before a footballer of today may run as much as 6-8 miles in a 90 minute game.

in the 80's i used to watch AF quite alot on Channel 4. my team were Washington Redskins, i quite liked John Riggins. the problem was, a game that's playing time is 1 hour long, it could take at least 3 1/2 hours to complete. now that's just too long, you might aswell go and watch Cricket.

Actually Rugby was a varient of football and American football a varient of Rugby, what is clear is that what Americans choose to call soccer is the definitive game of football. This thread therefore would make more sense if it compared Rugby and American football though of course the answers would still be based on familiarity above all else. I suppose the obvious solution is to see which of the games is most popular ( played by most people worldwide ) and that would make football the winner by a country mile, reckon there is a good chance of Rugby beating American football as well.

You are a farce. Along with everyone else complaining about the "name" of soccer. Surely you don't actually mean that the US has never won a world championship in basketball? I think the '92 Olympics more than make my point, though we have several other competitions to our name. Who are you kidding?

Off course, I dont mean that. The last time US won was 2000 Olympics. Since then it could get only bronze ;) As far as I understand, in the last two years US team is training properly as a national team... So you have no more excuses for Beijing olympics.

And certainly I prefer football being called football because that is its name...

I still disagree. Our best(by a long shot) players won't play. So that isn't really a fair representation of American skill. The Dream Team was, but honestly the world competion has gotten stiffer. I don't thnk that same team would have a gazillion point win average today. But, America still has the lock down on basketball. But you guys can have cricket, or whatever :P .

And the NCAA is waaaayyyy different than the NBA. It isn't that people don't love the NBA, it's that the NCAA is more personable for many Americans. There are a million teams, and you probably went to one of the schools. I would't compare the NCAA with the NBA.

And as far as calling it futbol, or soccer. Whats the big deal? I'm not upset with you guys for not calling U.S. Football a man's game. And over here, thats what we call it.

I think it's best to just let us call it soccer, and call it a regional thing. Like fries being called chips.

Sorry, but this is bollocks. Let us look at the national roster of US team
http://www.usabasketball.com/men_team.p ... 7sntroster
and compare it with the best NBA players this season
http://www.nba.com/statistics/player/Sc ... 1&splitDD=

Two top scoring players (points per game) James and Bryant are in. Top rebounding player Howard is in. Top stealing player Paul is in... Maybe, some of the "superstars", whoever they are (low life Camby and grandfathers O'Neal and Iverson) are missing but it is more important that US national practise together for 2 years... and was not selected by a popular vote but
entirely by Jerry Colangelo. There are all signs that US Basketball takes the issue of the national team extremely seriously at least since 2006 :!: :!:

You know FIBA basketball is a team game!! You can do zone defence there, you regularly double-team the most
dangerous player in the opposite team, and refs dont just give whistle because someone blocks "a superstar" ;) You really have no excuses for not winning Olympics this year =P~

Yes. Weirdest shit ever, though England has a lot of foreign players in their league, some of the best players in the world are still english.

The thing is that the national teams are really not teams. It's why countries without many star-players can win an EC, because it's about team-effort and actually doesn't benefit from having a bunch of selfish, over-paid veterans . It's why Greece won the last one and why Holland is such a favourite right now. They play like teams instead of a bunch of good footballers thrown into a team playing a few games for something which doesn't earn much money.

What england needs is driven, young players with a number of veterans who have proven their worth. (Like vdSar and vNistlerooy but not that damn Seedorf looking at holland.)
