Medieval II Total War Questions

Postby Ray Rider on Fri Jun 13, 2008 8:56 am

These are probably stupid questions, but I just started playing it so I have a good excuse ;)
1. How do I disband troops? I hired a bunch of mercenaries on a crusade and once it was over, I didn't know how to get rid of them (other than suiciding, of course).
2. If I enter into an alliance with another faction, does that only mean that we have better relations and won't attack each other, or does that mean that I'm supposed to go to war with anyone they go to war with?

1.To disband a unit right click on the unit card. This will open a scroll. On the left side there is a button that says disband unit.
2. You don't have to go to war with the enemys of your allies. They will help you in a battle if they are nearby. Don't trust your allies because they always betray you and attack you.

Awesome game!

1) You have to disband them individually. Left click on each unit. Then right click to bring up the information scroll (you know, where it shows you the various attack strengths etc). In the bottom left hand corner there are a couple of icons, one of which is the disband unit icon.

2) I think you are given the option, when your ally goes to war with another faction, of whether you wish to join them. If you don't, a message "Alliance in tatters" comes up. That means your relations with them go back to normal -I think.

basically, its a good idea to ally with as many people as possible. Most of them will break their alliances and attack you anyway, but it sometimes means a few factions will stay loyal, increasing your survival chances a bit.
But don't rely on your alliances! Backstabbing is quite frequent!

This happens only when two factions which are both allies to you go to war with each other. Then you must break your alliance with one of them but you don't have to go to war with them.

First off, sweet game, glad we have some others on CC that have it. :)

On the subject of alliances -- IMO you should only go into alliances if it will help you in the long run.....i.e., if Im the Scots, I would want to ally with the French, because we both have a common enemy in the British,m and the French are too far away to cause too much damage in the event of a betrayal. However, if you are based around water, you should ally with lots of factions, because then you get trade rights with them, and can rack in tons of money off ports.

Man, the Total War series is fantastic. The new one is certainly kick ass, but in a way I still like Rome Total War best. Maybe it was because as the Roman factions you had allies who wouldn't betray you as soon as you shared a border.

I like using the cheat codes in the game.

Though doing the building cheat in M2TW can be a pain in the ass sometimes. :?

Still an awesome game though! 8-)

Okay, thanks for the help with those two questions, everyone! I have another question now--how do you bribe a general, army, city, etc.?

Get a diplomat who has a lot of influence and make sure you have a lot of money, then go to an army not of your own and bribe them (Note:It doesn't always work with generals).

Yay total war is asome, played 1 for like 100 hours and I have 2.

Russia is so damn hard in Total Wars 2 since their cities are so spread out, and the generals always ditch you when you accidnetly make a unloyal person commander.

1. I find that, whenever possible, suiciding is far better than simply disbanding them, but, if you feel that you must disband them, right click on the unit card and click on the 'disband' button.
2. You are given the option to go to war or not and such. I find alliances bothersome. It's much easier to just keep trade rights with everyone you like and kill them off when you have spare time.

Great! Thanks! I'll try that.

I would imagine. I tried playing with the Germans and it went fine until about 30 turns in when everyone went to war with me. I started losing so bad that I quit and started over again with the British, which is much easier. So far I've wiped out Scotland, France, a few islands, and a few cities in the Holy Land. But I'm playing on the easiest level right now  I'm surprised how hard it is compared to the easiest level in Civilization.

Have the Mongols appeared yet?

Personally, I prefer the Byzantines. Mainly because they can obtain wealth much quicker then most of the other factions. (Plus, I like trying to restore the Roman Empire, wiped out the Turks and Venetians so far.)

I have a question. I recently got the expansion pack [kingdoms] and I'm trying to figure out how to play a custom battle in one of the 'new' forts (the permanent ones from Britannia) Is this simply impossible, or is there a way that I haven't figured out yet?

I owned in medieval wars 1. I was so strong I had 2 thirds of europe. I personally ended the polish,Italians,Germans,Hungarians,French, Spain, and almost the Alhmods. Then I tried going to war with the egyptians. Dammit you better kill those guys of early bacuse they get one of the strongest armies in the game. I was Russia. Their horseman with really long swords kill everything, including those pesky spearmen.

At one point, as the Almohods, I had control of all of North Africa, the Middle East, Turkey, Iberian Peninsula, France, Western part of Germany, and 3/4 of Russia. I wiped out the Egyptians, Turks, Byzantines, (The Spanish revived in Russia), the Mongols, the Russians, Hungarians, French, and almost the Poles, Danes, Germans, and Italians.

The danes kept blockading me, and they had the strongest navy in the game. I couldn't take them out.

In answer to my own question, it's possible to play a custom battle with a stone fort in the Crusades campaign.
