People seem to want to get maps out fast and not have to learn the tools. With all of my maps I tried to learn a differnt aspect of digital imaging. My goal in these was not olny to make a good map, but to learn a new way to make them as well
1st) KOTM - Maya (3D and shadow) Photoshop CS2 (Everything else) Learned the basics and slowly got better at shortcuts and the tools.
2nd) 8 Thoughts - CS2 ( I used only the Layer Style for the ENTIRE MAP.) I developed my skills and knowledge in: Blending Modes, Bevel, drop shadow, inner glow, outer glow, stroke, ..... I learned a lot about what I could do just from trying it out and knowing what I wanted to achieve.
3rd) Great Lakes - Illustrator 10 (Basic map terts and layout) CS2 (final touch ups, text, legend and Title). Again I desired to learn a new aspect of digital imaging (vector graphics) and I decided to learn on a map.
4th )....
And the rest of my maps used things I learned from making the previous. Even the work flow I have has evolved over the time. I learn how to be more efficient with folders (both in the file and on the computer. How to make a good small map and then design it so that I can scale it up without making it blurry. These are not things I learned from someone. they are things I figured out and developed myself.
If I had more time I would be willing to have an apprentice and help them out. But I don't have the time. My map making time has really lowered (as some of you older people may have noticed.)
When I say older I mean site membership not age
So here is what I recommend to anyone that wants to make a map that has not graphic program experience.1) Get a program. If you have $ buy photoshop. If not them get GIMP or Inkscape
2) See list at top of post
3) Come up with a new idea or and expansion of an old idea for a map. This is the place where may maps die, right at the start. People just say "Hey make this map..." and that is it. There is no thought put into the map. I normally spend about 10 hours (at least) thinking about my maps before I post (I have about 16 ideas not posted and 5 ideas posted on my computer now)
4) Plan it out before you post the idea. Try to anticipate issues the map might have (colors, text readability, blurry edges, bonuses, attack routes, etc) and fix them before you post. It will not only cut down on the number of complaints, it will show the other people here that you have the desire to make a map and start it properly.
5) Get ready to take the criticism. My first map got shot down. (rubix cube) I did not let that get me down. I wanted to show myself and everyone I could make a map. So I pressed on and came up with KOTM. and then 2 months later (or so) I had a map. Many arguments on colors and terts count etc, but it got done.
6) Don't ever settle for OK. Challenge yourself to be better. Learn new tools and styles.
So since I have no time to help someone along in a particular map, this advice above is what I can give. I hope this helps. It is how I got to where I am today.
Think outside the box. To quote a line from a favorite movie series of mine
Yoda wrote:"Do or do not... there is no try."
It is not that it can't be done, it is that you don't know how to do it yet.
