It's not that you wouldn't understand it without reading the book, I just read the book a few weeks ago.

It's just.... funnier. Kinda like a painting without one certain color. It still makes sense, it's still pretty, but with the added color it's even better.

Ok I know that was probably a horrible and girlish simile, but whatever.
Who doesn't want to watch Rodents of Unusual Size, a Fire Swamp, Fencing, A guy with 6 fingers, and someone getting life sucked out of them?

Awesome movie. If you haven't seen it...go watch it 30 times.

One of my all-time favourites.

But you also have to read the book to complete the experience. It is only when you take them together that you realise that, combined, they are a major work of art which addresses the essential nature of storytelling.

That sounds pompous, but go read the book anyhow, that's not pompous.

And suggsy, the movie is outstanding on its own, it's just that the book helps put the movie in context, like a lot of books do.

No. The film is great. The book is great. Either on its own is a wondrous thing. And a whole thing, complete in itself.

But, to see the film and read the book will transform your experience of both. It happens that I'd just read the book when I discovered the film. I was in the middle of the thought "this would make a great film" when I discovered that there was one. Directed by William Goldman, who wrote the book. (I will let movie buffs tell you about all the other great Goldman movies, this is not my point at this juncture).

Do both: see the film, read the book, and you will find something which is (I don't want to get all pretentious, but stay with me here, this is really something unique and I really do mean this) a multi media experience - in fact, an example of a legitmate use of a word which I usually hate - "holistic".

Excellent movie! The first time I watched it, I mistakenly thought that Mel Brooks had done it.

Actually, it was directed by Rob Reiner, son of Carl Reiner, who frequenty collaborated w/ Brooks.
