Gay Fags

Postby bedub1 on Fri May 30, 2008 3:52 pm

Are Happy Cigarettes!

Whats up with that? Why do those two words have two different meanings?

Are there any other words that have two different meanings like that?

You should check out this marvelous country called "england". I think it would explain a great deal.

It can be used to refer to the "girlfriend" or "wife" of a gay man who is only with them to appear straight to their friends/family.

Gay fags could be Happy Twigs, or Joyous Cigarettes.

Actually... "gay" has two meanings like that.

For that matter, so do most words have more than one meaning. That's why dictionaries list multiple definitions.

If a Brit says, "She wears very tight pants, you can see the shape of her fanny", this would be a far ruder phrase, (and indicate much more intimate knowledge) than if a U.S. guy said it.

Though, most guys don't say "fanny" anymore. It happens from time to time, of course, but I highly doubt in that situation (at least here in the US).

But then most people would have no doubt what a "gay fag" was either.

Incidentally, the word fag has other meanings in the UK, not least of which (can't swear it's still current) being a younger boy at a fee-paying school who acts as a personal servant for an older boy. So, given the fact that most such schools are boarding schools, and single-sex, where boys go during the onset of puberty, the "gay fag" can often be an appropriate label, even for unhappy servants.

Offhand I'm not familiar with the evolution of "gay" to that of male homosexuality. It doesn't make some interesting jokes that the "gay 90's" of the 19th century and the "gay 90's" of the 20th century have nothing to do with each other.

Fags, on the other hand was the result of cigar smokers. Real men smoked cigars. Smoking cigarettes (aka fags) was considered less manly therefore it was pushed to the effeminate as an insult against men. Ironically women considered smoking cigarettes a sign of equality to men.

Actually, fag is another word for a homosexual because it is short for faggot, which is an insulting word to homosexuals, normally used by homophobics or bi-curious right-wingers, but nice random story nonetheless.

No, this is another case how silimiar words mutate in circles. "Faggot" was orginally a contemptuous word for a woman or child. It is derived from fagot, which is bizzarely defined as a bundle of sticks. Conversely a fag is also defined as "an English public-school boy who acts as servant to an older schoolmate."

Strange isn't it?

Well .... don't ask for a rubber in the US when you want to erase something you have written. (rubber = condom in US; eraser US = rubber UK & SA)

Bisquits in the UK = cookie in the US; a "bisquit" in the US are those flakey things you eat for breakfast with butter . (or anytime down south)

Chips in the UK are called "french fries" in the US. I believe what we call chips here are called crisps (? -- thin crunchy fried potato slices).

And, I m told that "bloody" is not a phrase you would use around the Queen.

We also use the Term rubber-johnny for the things a man puts on his cock to halt ejaculation; the Term Condom only really came in about 15 -20 years ago here. (Johnny or rubber-Johnny, informal and Sheath was always formal.)

this is why JohnnyRockets name always makes me chuckle, as his name makes such a beautiful euphemism for a penis!

1. first off, it's biscuits, fool!

2. i s'pose you'r right there.

3. i think she'd be ok with it. i've always seen bloody as more of a PG-word than an actual swear.
