Vocal Jazz anyone?

Postby lilacfrostyness on Thu May 22, 2008 10:24 pm

Auditions for my school's Vocal Jazz Ensemble are coming up, and as there is a new teacher, there are new requirements.
Nothing too terrible.
You just have to sing a Jazz song. A Capella I believe.

Here's my problem, I seem to not know very many Jazz songs.

As for my vocal range, it's fairly wide, though more comfortable in the low notes. I can sing lower than I can higher, though I can hit the high notes with air, energy, and practice. I'm a young female.

The only songs I know of are Norah Jones, those I am comfortable with but I'm not sure if they're jazzy enough.
I would preferably like to sing a song that has been done by a female.

Any suggestions?
If you know where to listen to it in full, post a link. If not I can always listen to a clip on iTunes.

Thanks in advance

I'm not gonna do your googling for you, but try looking for Manhattan Transfer. Like many a band they are best known for their biggest success, which is also their worst song. But they covered decades of vocal jazz, and between them had a stunning range.
other than that most of my suggestions would tend to the improbably high. But for Classic stuff (not my style, bur definately jazz), you could look at Cleo Laine - throaty, loud, a sort of female jazz vocal equivalent of Brian Blessed.
